I know the Knicks are hesitant to give up RJ. But if it is clear that a Dame, Kawhi, and Randell big 3 could be in the works they would be willing to trade him. His $8.6 mil contract might not make a significant impact on their ability to sign Kawhi now, but it does limit their avilablity to sign roll players like Green, Rose, and Melo. RJ is also going to ask for over $20 mil in a couple years, at which point they will have to pick between him and Randall. The Knicks are able to resign all their valuable roll players for their bench, while also bringing Melo with Dame back to NYC, and getting Kawhi back with his friend Danny Green. In reality they only give up 2 of their own picks here and both of them have protections, plus they get to keep pick #19 to sign a decent rookie in this deep draft.

Trading Dame is less than ideal, but if we do this is the type of package we should expect in return. We get 2 potential young stars in RJ and Quickley, along with 2 former lottery picks that could still turn into something in Knox and Toppin. Because we get nice young pieces, the pick haul will be more limited than with other potential Dame trades. Pick #21 this year is solid, the pick in 2022 will likely go to the Blazers because the Knicks will make the playoffs but it will be between 25-30, the Mavs pick in 2023 could be valuable but only time will tell, and the Knicks will end up with a pick in 2024 anyways since it is a swap. Every player aside from CJ is relatively young, this would help to jump start the Blazers rebuild if Dame demands a trade.
