Pelicans get a needed defensive stretch big in Lopez and improve interior defense greatly. Bobby portis also brings great scoring off the bench. In summary this trade makes the pelicans worse offensively but definitely better defensively. This trade is much better in the long term for the pelicans organization as it adds two valuable draft picks along with expiring deals.

For the rockets they get a solid vet who averaged 25 ppg in last years playoffs and has now been playing consistent games after missing the beginning of the season.
