GRADING EVERY TEAMS PERFORMANCE IN THE 2021 NBA DRAFT, PART 2, WESTERN CONFERENCE

Based entirely on my own opinions, let me know what you would change. I will do my best to articulate my points to the fullest. I will bring up undrafted free agents if they feel notable and impact my grade for the team.

DALLAS MAVERICKS

Picks: None, EJ Onu, Eugene Omuruyi, and Carlik Jones undrafted

For a team with no picks, the Dallas Mavericks came out with a really solid haul. Lets start with the bad. The Mavericks, outside of the obvious, are still without shot creators. When Luka isn't humming or he is off the court, the team completely falls apart. He needs his own Khris Middleton and Jrue Holiday. While you can't expect undrafted free agency to fix that part of the Mavericks roster, you can expect for a little bit of a creator with shooting equity. EJ Onu, while a great value play, doesn't help with that. I am still really excited with that selection. I have Onu as a borderline first round prospect, and I think that the Mavericks getting this uptempo big man who hasn't been wrecked with industries could be great for the speed of the team. Hopefully KP is mature enough to try and teach EJ, because they have very similar packages in terms of scoring, obviously in different levels of quality. I think that EJ was a very draftable prospect, so getting him undrafted is huge. Eugene has some 3 and d potential, and while I don't expect his creation at Oregon to translate to the NBA, he could be a solid asset for the Mavericks. Carlik Jones could certainly run a little bit of point guard, but as a ball dominant poor shooter, it will be entirely in a backup role, if he even gets to that level as a player. I still like their draft, good value for no draft picks.

GRADE: B+

DENVER NUGGETS

Picks: Nah'Shon "Bones" Hyland at 26

A fairly quiet draft for Denver. They pick up Bones Hyland at 26, and stand pat the rest of the night. Now, this could be not valid criticism, but I desperately wanted the Nuggets to trade up just a few picks, and grab Usman Garuba. The combined offense, defense, and passing with Usman and Jokic as a long term front court would be upsurd, with both parties perfectly helping the other. But, I understand what Denver was thinking. They want to remain competitive next year while Jamal Murray is out, and Bones can replicate an inkling of the scoring threat that Jamal gave. The spacing that Bones gives with Jokic is pretty enticing, and if all goes well, can use that gravity that he potentially has to completely change the geometry of the court. The defense is a little scary, especially with Doug McDerrmott being linked to Denver, but all in all a very solid pick. I don't really understand Bones over Springer or Butler, but you do you Denver.

Grade: B

GOLDEN STATE WARRIORS

Picks: Jonothan Kuminga at 7, Moses Moody at 14, JaQuori McLaughlin undrafted

Just an elite draft for the Warriors. They had two ways to go on draft night, both that scared me. I was thinking that they would go for Davion Mitchell and a Chris Duarte at 7 and 14 in order to win now, but that doesn't swing the needle for anybody. I was also thinking that a Josh Giddey and James Bouknight draft was in the cards, which to me would feel like a closing of the book of the Klay, Curry, and Draymond era as they swing to think about the future. However, the Warriors had their cake and ate it too. I didn't think Kuminga was falling past the Thunder, (and I still don't think he should've), so that was a steal for Golden State. Kuminga seems to have been universally sliding down draft boards, which I somewhat get, but it feels as if draft people are purposefully looking past all the good that he brings. A great high upside guy, and I cannot wait to see how a Kuminga and Wiseman front line working out. Moody at 14 was a great great win now pick. The fact that Chris Duarte went before him is constantly crazy to me. I expect him to right now be the best second wing that the Warriors can play in a closing lineup. The open looks that he will get off of Curry and Klays gravity is crazy, just a perfect fit. And then McLaughlin, one of the more underrated players in the whole draft, is just a great value play in undrafted free agency. While I do not think they are winning this year, they give themselves a shot for the present and the future.

GRADE: A

HOUSTON ROCKETS

Picks: Jalen Green at 2, Alperen Sengun at 16, Usman Garuba at 23, Josh Christopher at 24, Matthew Hurt undrafted

I like the draft for Houston, but I will say it is getting a bit overrated. Starting with the good, they got so much talent. Jalen Green is probably the most talented scorer in the draft (I may take Cade or Cam, but it is close), Sengun is the most talented post player, Garuba is the most talented defender (not to be confused for best, that would be Mobley), and Christopher + Hurt have oodles of talent that just needs to be harnessed. The Rockets are obviously in a position where they just take best available, which is fair, and if this is who they think is best, I will give them that, but I would take a few picks in different ways. Jalen Green should've been Evan Mobley. Mobley is a generational prospect that was the clear #2, and while Jalen will be good, I think it is entirely possible that Houston is bashing themselves for not going for Mobley. Sengun was a great pick, I absolutely love it. The defense with a Sengun and Christian Wood front line is a little worrisome, but the offensive capabilities are very enticing. Christopher felt like a bit of a reach, which I wound understand more if he was a great fit. There simply aren't enough basketballs for Christopher, KPJ, and Green, and throwing in Sengun and Wood as two not great playmakers is going to be interesting to watch. I would've loved Springer at 24, would've helped with defense and playmaking. Hurt was a great undrafted pick up, but I am worried who is gonna get him the ball, because most of this team aren't passing. I'd argue that the two best passers on the roster are the two rookie bigs, which is unique.

GRADE: A- (changed after realizing it was the same as Dallas)

LOS ANGELES CLIPPERS

Picks: Keon Johnson at 21, Jason Preston at 32, BJ Boston at 51

Very meh draft for the Clippers. Keon Johnson most definitely will not help anyone win now. I have always been low on Keon, I just don't see him as having NBA skills that are very valuable. He is a good defender, but not big enough to guard 3s and 4s, and guard defense is one of the least impactful skills in the game. He can hit a mid range jump shot, but you have to be truly talented in order to make that an efficient shot for your team, which in my mind is a long ways away. He is an athlete, but not a super functional one; he wasn't a good cutter in college and was in the bottom 20% in transition last year in college basketball. I hope that the Clippers are gonna run a lot of plays through Keon this year while Kawhi is out, and then once his value is nice and increased, flip him for a win now player, because I don't see Keon as a long term fit next to Kawhi and PG. Jason Preston really worries me as well, his lack of scoring and athleticism could be fatal for his NBA career. I would've taken JT Thor, Ayo Dosunmu, or Miles McBride over any of the guys they got, and especially at 33. At 21, Cam Thomas I believe is a much better fit, both talent wise and in terms of what the Clippers are trying to accomplish. BJ Boston, on the other hand, was a great upside play, really glad that the Clippers made that move. That is the redeeming light of the draft for LAC.

GRADE: C

LOS ANGELES LAKERS

Picks: None, Austin Reaves, Joel Ayayi, and Chaundee Brown as undrafted free agents

Lakers are the easy winners of undrafted free agency. While I am not the highest on Austin Reaves, he has NBA skills in his driving, pick and roll playmaking, and finishing. I think his feel for the game and fluidity will fit great next to what the Lakers are trying to accomplish. I would've bet a lot of money on Reaves getting picked. Joel Ayayi is another absolute steal. The best cutter in college basketball, with a respectable 3 point shot and great team defense. He is one of the perfect roleplayer archtypes, and I think that there is a chance that he pretty immediately is getting minutes on a team without much depth. One of my favorite comps for him was Alex Caruso, so it makes sense that he ends up in LA. And with Chaundee Brown, the rich get richer. A top 60 guy on my board, a knockdown three point shooter and great defender, fits perfectly with Lebron and AD. The Lakers dominated undrafted free agency, once again proving the lure of bigger markets.

GRADE: A

MEMPHIS GRIZZLIES

Picks: Zaire Williams at 10, Santi Aldama at 30

Bad draft, straight up. I usually really like what Memphis does in the draft and free agency, but these picks kinda confused me. Zaire was just a pretty big reach, and I would expect he would still be available at 17, and they would still have Valanciunas. I don't hate Williams, but I don't see a reasonable path to him getting playing time for a long bit here, and I think a James Bouknight or even a Tre Mann would make much more sense for a team that is both trying to win now and develop prospects. I wish him the best, but I can't really understand what Memphis is going for. Santi Aldama is a bad pick. On a team that I am pretty comfortable all the way through with their big men, in Tilman, JJJ, and Clarke, Aldama feels like an odd man out. He is a terrible defender, immediately placing him at odds with what the Grizzlies have built. He has some passing prowess, but none that I expect to be fully realized because he isn't bringing a sense of urgency to the other team in the short roll for example. I do like the idea of his movement shooting around the perimeter, but I think he may just be unplayable on defense. Not strong enough or smart enough to be the 5, and not quick enough to be the 4. Very perplexing picks by Memphis.

GRADE: D+

MINNESOTA TIMBERWOLVES

Picks: None, McKinly Wright undrafted

Wow, a team that I won't have to write 300 words for! Not much that you can really ask for the Timberwolves to do, I wish they could find a way to get Usman with Towns, but the Timberwolves have their core so just getting some finishing touches is the play right now. McKinly Wright is a great pick up though, I think that he has some great backup point guard potential. He has the ability to run an offense, and someone to cool down the entire run-and-gunniness of the team is big, because I don't think that Russell is a real point guard, and Edwards can't be a primary ballhandler. Nice undrafted pick up, nothing to complain about for a Minnesota fan.

GRADE: B-

NEW ORLEANS PELICANS

Picks: Trey Murphy III at 17, Herb Jones at 35, Jose Alvarado undrafted

Love the draft for New Orleans. While the biggest problem for the Pelicans was obviously spacing first and foremost, defense was a clear second. That was fixed pretty easily. If you don't know Murphy, he is the prototypical 3 and d prospect, which to my knowledge the Pelicans haven't really had in the Zion Williamson era. As long as Murphy can stand in the corner and play some solid POA defense, he is a great fit in the long term core. Herb Jones is a great pick as well. A top 3 defender in the class, with some shooting potential fills Pelicans needs pretty well. I think Jose there as well, as a great defender with some playmaking chops, fits exactly what is needed. HOWEVER, I think this draft goes deeper than defensive players. The Pelicans are getting ready to speed up the pace. Trey Murphy is a great athlete, and it pops when he is one the run. Herb Jones has good end to end speed, and his open court playmaking is so underrated, and Alvarado is never one to turn down a fast break. Filling Zions team with bad floor spacing and giving him a coach who plays halfcourt offense was malpractice, and I can't wait to see what a fully unleashed Williamson can do.

GRADE: A-

Oklahoma City Thunder

Picks: Josh Giddey at 6, Tre Mann at 18, Jeremiah Robinson Earl at 32, Aaron Wiggins at 55

The most inconsistent draft for me. Starting with the good, Jeremiah Robinson Earl at 32 is a great great pick. He is filling a pressing front court hole, and is just great all around value for OKC. Not every pick should be a big swing, get a guaranteed high level role player every once in a while. Love that portion of the draft. Aaron Wiggins at 55, solid pick. A player with some solid 3 and d chops, picking those up are always wins in my book. Happy with both of those selections. However, Josh Giddey at 6 doesn't make a ton of sense to me. He is a ball dominant player. Shai Gilgeous Alexander is a ball dominant player. And while we are at, Tre Mann is a ball dominant player, and all three are at the guard position. Giddey is good, it just feels like a reach for someone lacking shooting, athleticism, and defense. Kuminga, to me, felt like the clear correct pick, because in my eyes, he has higher upside, and better positional fit in the current core. At 18, I like Tre Mann, and I don't think it was a reach, but it is a bit concerning thinking about he is gonna fit in the crowded backcourt in OKC. Best in the pick and roll, with OKC clear out of rollers, and with the ball, and they don't have those either. Kuminga and Kai felt like the way to go

GRADE: B

PHOENIX SUNS

Picks: None!

No picks, which is fine, I applaud them for standing pat. However, and I won't factor this into the grade, that Jevon Carter trade was pretty bad for them. Not much to say though about their draft

GRADE: C

PORTLAND TRAILBLAZERS

Picks: Greg Brown III at 43, Trendon Watford undrafted

Not a fan of this draft for Portland. I am notoriously low on Greg Brown, I didn't and do not view him as a draftable player. The lack of feel, any skill at basketball, and motor is such a complete turn off. His athleticism is also thoroughly overrated. Vertical leap is one small part of the game, and while he is so elite in that regard, the rest of it is only slightly above average in my opinion. I don't see him turning into anything, but I hope he proves me wrong. His fit on the team is also questionable. He is the definition of a project pick. The Blazers are the definition of a team that needs to put winning together NOW. Picking Brown when Kessler, Sharife, Johnson, and Bassey were still on the board is mind boggling to me. Seems as if Portland is lacking self awareness. Watford is a solid pick up, a horrible defender though that I am unsure can ever play at the same time as Dame and CJ. All in all, not a fan of their draft night.

GRADE: D

SACRAMENTO KINGS

Picks: Davion Mitchell at 9, Neemias Queta at 39, DJ Steward undrafted

Another very poor draft, a good reflection of one of the worst franchises in professional sports. Constantly muddling, making picks to make picks, seemingly not to try and get better. The second Davion Mitchells name was called for the Kings, I felt for Sacramento fans. I can only imagine how it must feel to be cheering for a team that doesn't reciprocate the love you send its way. Davion Mitchell is a terrible terrible fit, and a major reach by Sacramento. A team, whose only 2 long term assets are manning the guard positions, pick a small, short wingspanned, not great playmaking point guard. Will he ever be a long term starter? Probably not. Was he picked in a range that demands that kind of production for historical prevalence? Yes, a strong yes. A catastrophic pick that to me, sums up everything wrong in Sacramento; a complete lack of leadership, coaching, and self awareness. I hope he proves me wrong, because Davion is one of my favorite prospects to watch, and the silver lining is the potential culture change he brings, but color me doubtful.

Neemias Queta wasn't bad.

GRADE: D-

SAN ANTONIO SPURS

PICKS: Josh Primo at 12, Joe Weiskamp at 41, Matt Mitchell undrafted

I really didn't want to continue my negativity for the Spurs. I really wanted to be a fan of their picks but I just can't do it. Primo just doesn't make any sense to me here, and reeks of a front office too lazy and pretentious to do their due diligence and try and make a trade back. I look at the Spurs like I look at Christopher Nolan; trying too hard to be smart for the sake of being smart. Primo could end up being a great pick, but a great pick that could've been made at 17. He also doesn't fit in the spurs depth chart at all. Dejounte, White, Walker, Vassell, Jones, even Keldon to an extent; the spurs didn't need any more guards, they needed bigs, and they had Kai Jones waiting to be taken. Weiskamp is a solid value play, but falls into the same hole that Primo faced in fit. Just doesn't make sense schematically. I like the Matt Mitchell pick up, definitely a Spurs guy with his high iq and feel for the fundamentals.

GRADE: D+

UTAH JAZZ

PICKS: Jared Butler at 40, Macio Teague undrafted

I'll try and leave the homer out of this grading, but what a draft for Utah. Picking up Jared Butler at 40 is one of the steals of the draft no doubt, and the gamble that was trading down to 40 because they thought they could get their guy AND additional assets is mindblowing to me. I love what Utah did here fit wise as well. Butler can immediately come in and play a Desmond Bane type role, running off of screens and hitting open threes. Later, I think he can transition to a George hill job description; running the pick and roll but being a primarily off ball player, and sticking with the quicker guards in the league. At his apex, I believe he can be a Mike Conley/Malcolm Brogdon player, strong enough skill wise to do anything a guard could ever be asked on offense, while playing really solid defense. Great long term fit with Donovan, my only qualm is I wish he was a tiny bit taller and with longer arms. Can't really complain though. Macio Teague is a nice high win low risk player, could eventually be a solid Wes Matthews esque dude. The thing is with Butler though, to circle back to the selling point, is that I think he is straight up a better prospect than Mitchell and Duarte, and I think most gms agree with the second point skill wise. If he is healthy, he is a proven winner and a great pick.

GRADE: A

Alright, wow, that was 4000 characters longer than my last one haha, let me know what you think. Sorry Kings fans, had to say what has been on my mind
