The Atlanta Hawks are in an interesting situation, they have a lot of talent on their roster but they haven’t been able to make it work this season having to win 2 play-in games as the 10th seed just to make the playoffs where I expect them to lose in 4 or 5 to the Heat. I don’t like calling things too early but a first round exit is a disappointing end to the season for the Hawks after losing to the eventual champions the Bucks in last year's ECF. If they want to contend in 2022/23 big moves will need to be made this offseason. I’m going to go through what I think the best route for the Hawks FO to take is, including the draft, trades and free agency. Without further ado, let’s get into it!

The Draft

The Hawks will have pick 16 in this year's draft and I think the type of player they should target is a multi-positional defender on the wing who can come in and play solid minutes off the bench for them right away. The 2 guys that fit that mold perfectly are Tari Eason and Jeremy Sochan. Eason has the more polished all-round game of the 2 and is also a threat on offense which is an added bonus. Sochan has legit DPoY potential as a 6’9 defensive beast who can guard anyone 1-5 (with the exception of a couple guys like Giannis, Embiid etc.). Offensively he isn’t very good right now but he has the athleticism and strength to become a good finisher and his jump shot has potential.

Both of those guys could be off the board by 16 however and if that is the case, these are some other prospects that would also be a good fit.

Harrison Ingram - pretty similar to Eason but slightly worse in most areas and quite a bit worse offensively.

E.J. Liddel, is a great rebounder and interior defender but he’s an older prospect and can’t defend the perimeter as well as some other guys.

Wendell Moore Jr. - Moore Jr. is a great 3&D guy who can provide some playmaking too, he can’t guard 4s and 5s though.

Trevor Keels - in my opinion Keels is the best of the rest, he can lock down the opposing teams go-to guy and though he is a little undersized he has proven he can guard bigger players successfully.

MarJon Beauchamp - a 6’7 wing who has performed solidly against good competition in the G-League. Has great defensive potential but isn’t quiet at the level of the other guys here just yet.

Trades

As I said the Hawks need to make drastic moves this offseason if they want to contend. Other than Trae, Okungwu and Hunter everyone should be available for trades to improve their roster. I am going to go through the trade at the top of this post here, mainly from the Hawks point of view but I’ll add the reasons why the other teams do it as well.

Hawks: The biggest issue for the Hawks this season has been their defense, which is ranked 26th out of all teams. Here, they fully address that issue by getting 3 guys who are good to elite defenders. The biggest part of this deal is the acquisition of Pascal Siakam to start at the 4 for the Hawks and be Trae’s co-star. It will cost them quite a bit to make the Raptors part with him but it’s worth it for the elite play on both ends that he will give them. They finally get a good defensive SG to play next to Trae in Malcolm Brogdon. Brogdon is better at the 2 in my opinion and he could return to being a 50-40-90 without the pressures of running the offense completely. The third guy they get here is Kenrich Williams, he won’t cost a lot from the Thunder and he can be a great backup behind Deandre Hunter.

Pacers: The Pacers will be continuing their rebuild next season and trading Brogdon and giving Tyrese Haliburton the keys to the offense should be one of the first things they do. They get John Collins who can be their PF for the future and is a nice fit with Hali. They also receive a 2nd rounder in this year's draft that will be around the 45 mark.

Raptors: I may have undervalued Siakam here but I think the return they get for him is fair. They get a near 20ppg scorer in Bogdanovic, a veteran stretch big in Danilo Galinari, a young prospect with good potential in Jalen Johnson plus 2 firsts and 2 seconds. It improves their depth greatly and the picks give them more flexibility to make future moves.

Thunder: This ones pretty simple for them, they give up a vet and get 2 seconds while giving Knox another chance.

Free Agency

The Hawks don’t have the cap space to make any big moves in free agency so all they are doing is filling out the rotation. They use their MLE to pick up Tyus Jones to run point guard off the bench for them, which he has proved himself to be very capable at while in Memphis. They also resign Delon Wright as a nice defensive SG who can be the 11th man in the rotation. They might also want to sign a 3rd string center in case one of OO and Capela gets injured but other than that I think their roster is good.

This took a while to write so a like and flame would be appreciated. Let me know your thoughts on this and what you think the Hawks should do this offseason. Thanks for reading and as always, until next time. (lol)
