Explanation & Analysis
The upcoming year will be the first full season Indiana will have with Tyrese Haliburton after trading away their All-Star in Domantas Sabonis for him. The Pacers have made it know that they want to stay competitive & not be a bad rebuilding team for years to come. So with that in mind, here’s what I would do for Indiana to keep them competitive & in playoff position next year.
The first move I’d make is to trade Malcolm Brogdon, Oshae Brissett, & two future 2nds to the Atlanta Hawks for John Collins & the 45th pick in the upcoming draft. With a backcourt of Haliburton & Duarte already on the roster, it would be smart for Indiana to flip Brogdon for a starting caliber forward. Collins would be a great addition to this squad at the four position & be a solid pick & roll partner for Haliburton. He’s someone that can play defense & hit his shots from deep, which is always appreciated from a big man.
Next transaction I’d make is to move Myles Turner to the Charlotte Hornets for Gordon Hayward, Jalen McDaniels, & the 13th pick in the 2022 NBA Draft. I’m a believer in dealing Turner if I’m the Pacers because one, his value is still pretty high, & two, he’s on an expiring contract with some injury history. This trade gives Indiana someone who’ve they wanted for a while in Hayward & an extra lottery pick in the upcoming draft plus a young player in McDaniels.
The third thing I’d do is acquire Mo Bamba from the Orlando Magic in a sign & trade for TJ McConnell, Goga Bitadze, & the 58th pick in the second round. Bamba would be a solid cheaper & younger replacement at the center position. He fits very well next to Collins due to his ability to space the floor. At 7 feet tall, Bamba is a nice rim protector & shot blocker to hold down the interior for Indiana. A rotation between Bamba & Jackson at the center position gives the Pacers something special to look forward to.
To summarize these three trades, Indiana basically stays competitive but gets younger at the same time with the addition of John Collins, Mo Bamba, & an extra lottery pick to use in the upcoming NBA draft.
It’s time for the 2022 NBA Draft, & with the 5th pick, the Indiana Pacers select AJ Griffin, forward out of Duke University. Griffin is a well built, athletic, & powerful wing that can get it done on both sides of the floor. He’s a solid defender due to his size, length, & aggressiveness. On the offensive end, Griffin does a nice job scoring through contract & is a great shooter from deep. He’ll start off his career on the bench behind a veteran in Gordon Hayward, who would be a nice mentor that can help develop his game, before assuming the starting SF spot full time.
Then with the 13th pick, I’d take Jeremy Sochan, PF from Baylor, who is a great energetic defender that can guard multiple positions due to his quickness. Offensively he’s a capable shooter but does need to improve a bit. Sochan has a modern day skill-set for a big man, which many teams would love to have.
Next picks for Indiana to make will be at 31 & 45, which I have them drafting Christian Koloko & Keon Ellis respectively. Koloko is 7’1 center that is projected to be a solid rim protector in the league. He is also a very good rebounder & has nice hands. Ellis, on the other hand, is a athletic guard that has nice defense & decent shooting. He has much experience under his belt as a four year collegiate basketball player.
And at last, free agency. As the Pacers GM, I’d look to resign Jalen Smith on a short term deal, as he did well with his minutes given last season. He’ll have to fight for his spot in the rotation with Collins, Bamba, Sochan, & Jackson in front of him, but there’s nothing wrong with competition. Next up I would sign a backup point guard that can also play alongside Haliburton. Dennis Schroeder would be a great addition on a friendly two year deal at $13 million a year with a team option. He’s a experienced guard & former sixth man of the year that can help keep this Indiana squad competitive alongside Buddy Hield off the bench.
After this amazing offseason, I can see this Pacers team being anywhere from a 5th to 9th seed in playoff position if they stay healthy. They’ve got great depth at every position & have a nice mix of young guys & veterans to play alongside each other. If Haliburton takes the next step in his game & Collins succeeds in his larger role, Indiana will be very scary next year.
