Comment Opinions Please. Is This Fair?
LAL: Mike Conley, Bojan Bogdanovic, TJ McConnell, & Myles Turner
UTA: Russell Westbrook, 2027 1st, & 2023 2nd
IND: Kendrick Nunn, Talen Horton-Tucker, 2029 1st, & 2023 CHI 2nd
Why Los Angeles Does This?
Isn’t it obvious? This 3 team trade right here turns the Lakers into instant title contenders. From Utah, they acquire a better fit at the point guard position in Mike Conley. He’s someone who can be a secondary playmaker on this team & run a deadly pick & roll with Anthony Davis on the offensive end. I can also see Conley making excellent use of Damian Jones, who’d be the backup center after these moves. Then the Lakers also land Bojan Bogdanovic from the Jazz. This man is exactly what Lebron needs around him at this stage of his career. He’s can create scoring opportunities for himself & at the same time punish you if you leave him open from deep. Bogdanovic is someone who can give you an efficient 17-18 ppg while nailing over 38% of his shots from beyond the arc.
Now onto the second part of this mega 3 team deal, the Lakers acquire Myles Turner from Indiana. I’ve been a proponent of Turner to Los Angeles for three years now, because his pairing with Anthony Davis is simply great. A front court of Turner & AD would be the best in the league defensively. Nobody is scoring against this duo inside the paint. And on the offensive side of the ball, both are capable of spacing the floor & opening driving lanes for their teammates, which LeBron should really take advantage of. Adding Turner’s elite rim protection & ability to space the floor next to AD’s defensive switch ability & post game will scare the living hell out of opposing teams. Lastly, also from the Indiana, the Lakers get their hands on a defensive minded point guard who can be an irritating pest against other players. TJ McConnell brings multiple unique qualities to a team, including energy, drive, & hustle. He’ll undoubtedly become a Lakers favorite in short time with his determination on the defensive end & ability to rack up steals.
To conclude, these moves for the Lakers right here is what will put them in the best position possible to compete for championship in the next 2-3 years. They acquire everything they need in this one multi-team trade to balance their roster; playmaking, shooting, defense, rebounding, & rim protection. I believe if this specific Lakers squad stays healthy, they’ll be a top 4 seed in the super tough western conference & favorites to reach the NBA finals.
Lakers Ideal Starting Lineup:
Conley, Bogdanovic, James, Davis, & Turner
McConnell, Walker IV, Reaves, Johnson, & Jones
Rest Of Bench:
Christie, Toscano-Anderson, Brown Jr, Gabriel, & Bryant
Why Utah Does This?
In order to kick-start their retooling of the roster. This trade in my opinion makes sense whether Mitchell is on the roster or not. The Jazz in this deal receive a huge expiring contract along with a 2nd in the upcoming draft class in place of Conley’s multi-year deal & an unprotected 1st round pick five years from now for Bojan Bogdanovic. A move like this gives Utah multiple options involving Russell Westbrook. They can either start him alongside Mitchell & stay somewhat competitive. Or they can buy him out right away & commit to landing the highest draft pick possible. I’d probably with the latter to be honest knowing that Victor Wembanyama could be in play.
The best case scenario for Utah after making this trade is landing a top 2 pick in the 2023 NBA draft & signing an All-Star caliber player or two with the $50M+ they’ll have in cap space after Westbrook’s money is off their books. There are multiple big 3’s or fantastic 4’s the Jazz can potentially create with Mitchell, either Victor or Scoot, & available free agents like D’Angelo Russell, Gary Trent Jr, Dillon Brooks, Andrew Wiggins, Jerami Grant, & Jakob Poeltl.
Jazz Potential Lineup:
Unknown due to ongoing Donovan Mitchell trade speculation along with other veterans like Patrick Beverley & Jordan Clarkson.
Why Indiana Does This?
The Pacers have been stuck in an endless cycle of mediocrity for the longest time now. I can see them either being good enough to make the play-in tournament or not class to bad enough & their 1st rounder being right outside the top 5. Indiana needs to choose a clear direction & I believe that should be tanking for Victor Wembanyama. In this trade, the Pacers move on from Myles Turner for Kendrick Nunn & the coveted Lakers 2029 1st 7 years from now, which has the potential to be extremely valuable, along with swapping TJ McConnell for Talen Horton-Tucker & a 2023 2nd in a super deep draft class.
Moving on from both Myles Turner & TJ McConnell allows Indiana’s young guys like Isaiah Jackson & Andrew Nembhard to gain more minutes in the rotation. I personally want to see Jackson become the starting center next to Jalen Smitn. He’s a big man that’s very versatile defensively, can guard multiple positions, impact shots in the paint, space the floor offensively, & be a relatable lob threat for Tyrese Haliburton. Also, I was one of the more higher people on Nembhard coming out of college due to his ability to run an offense & defend well on the other side of the court. He can definitely play alongside his teammates in Haliburton, Duarte, & Mathurin with his tall 6’5 frame.
Pacers Ideal Starting Lineup:
Haliburton, Duarte, Mathurin, Smith, & Jackson
Nembhard, Hield, Horton-Tucker, Brissett, & Bitadze
Rest Of Bench:
Nunn, Nesmith, Taylor, Brown, & Theis
