Explanation & Analysis

After a roller coaster ride of a season, that included Portland trading away CJ McCollum, Norman Powell, Robert Covington, & Larry Nance Jr, the Blazers will have to decide what direction they’ll take in the upcoming offseason. Will they try to build a real contender around Damian Lillard? Or will they move on from Dame & head towards a rebuilding phase? If I’m their GM, I’d look to trade Damian Lillard away & start rebuilding. I don’t see Portland pulling off a blockbuster trade for a superstar or signing marquee free agents like Bradley Beal, Zach LaVine, or Deandre Ayton. So without any further ado, let’s get started.

The first move I’d make is to trade Damian Lillard & Didi Louzada to the Denver Nuggets for Michael Porter Jr, Bones Hyland, JaMychal Green, Two 1st Round Picks in 2022 & 2027, & Three Potential Swaps in 2024, 2026, & 2028. This would be a magnificent move for Portland in my opinion. They acquire a young potential superstar in MPJ, who when healthy, is an excellent offensive player. Then they also land another young player in Bones, who has played very well this season for Denver as a guard off the bench. And lastly, a total of basically five picks to work with in the future. Those two potential in swaps in 2026 & 2028 along with an unprotected 1st in 2027 could be extremely valuable because we don’t know what’s going to happen 4-6 years from now. I believe this is a win for all three parties. Portland gets a legit haul for their superstar, Denver forms a superstar team with Dame, Murray, & Jokic, & Lillard finally receives an opportunity to actually compete for a championship.

Next transaction I’d make to sign & trade Jusuf Nurkic along with Justice Winslow & the 57th pick to the Dallas Mavericks for Davis Bertans, Josh Green, & the 26th pick in the first round. This deal here gives Portland another 1st to use in the upcoming draft along with a young player in Josh Green who’s had a good season thus far. Yes they do take on Bertans bad contract here, but I’d rather receive him along with Green & that 1st than lose Nurkic for nothing in free agency. It’s very normal for young rebuilding teams to have bad contracts on their squad so I don’t believe getting Bertans in return is a big deal.

The third & last thing I’d do is deal Nassir Little to the Minnesota Timberwolves for the 40th pick & a future 2025 2nd. Little is on an expiring contract & he hasn’t really impressed so far in his three seasons in Portland. A team like Minnesota, who needs two way forwards, would be a nice fit for him. The Blazers can use that second rounder to draft a replacement with potentially higher upside. This move also allows Davis Bertans to be the primary backup forward, which could end up increasing his value if he plays well.

It’s time for the 2022 NBA Draft, & with the 6th pick, the Portland Trailblazers select Bennedict Mathurin, SG/SF out of the University of Arizona. He’s a well built wing that has nice size at the two. Mathurin is someone who can shoot & score effectively on the offensive end & create for himself. He’d be a solid fit next to Anfernee Simons. Defensively he needs to improve a little bit, but the potential is there to be a lockdown perimeter defender.

Then with the 20th pick, I’d select Kendall Brown, forward from Baylor University. At 6’8, Brown is already a standout defender that can guard positions one through four. He’s a very athletic wing player that can play above the rim & off the ball well. If he can just improve his 3pt shooting & develop more confidence from beyond the arc, he’ll be a real problem in the league. I really like him at the PF spot next to MPJ in the future as he can cover up his defensive weaknesses.

Onto the 26th pick, the Trail Blazers select Walker Kessler, a 7’1 center out of North Carolina. Kessler is someone who has solid potential to be a top center in the league. He’s a great screener, rebounder, defender, rim protector, & shot blocker. He is quite strong & has a decent post game. Kessler also has potential to be a stretch big, as he’s shown the ability to knock down shots from deep. If Kessler is available at 26, he’d be a steal for Portland.

Next picks for Trail Blazers to make will be at 36 & 40, which I have them taking Hugo Besson & Josh Minott respectively. Besson is a smart & skilled play maker from New Zealand that can handle the ball well & score off the dribble. Minott, on the other hand, is a big athletic forward excels at playing around the basket. He’s a solid rebounder & shot blocker that needs to put on size & develop his outside shot.

And at last, free agency. First thing is to resign Anfernee Simons to a long term deal, as he is their long term option at the point guard position. Simons has All-Star potential & is still only 22 years old. Next up I’d sign Mitchell Robinson to a long term deal as well. He’d be a solid defensive interior presence for the Blazers next to Josh Hart & has potential to be a top big man in the league. A center rotation of Robinson & Kessler has the potential to be one of the best in the league. Portland could also potentially run a twin towers lineup with Kessler at the four, which would be really fun to watch.

After this franchise altering offseason, the Blazers now have a bright future to look forward to. They’ve got their two young stars in Simons & MPJ along with many other young & talented players. I can see Portland finishing just outside the play-in next season with this squad. But in two-three years from now, they could be a real dangerous threat., especially if they hit the jackpot with their 2023 1st round pick.
