Another unorthodox trade: Knicks and Bulls

SUCCESS

I feel like this is a weird one but also that it does kind of work. Straight to the team by team rationale.

Knicks: The Knicks need much more from their bench if they want to make the playoffs and hopefully at least win a playoff round. This trade sees them acquire some solid role players in Caruso and Drummond and a promising young player in Williams. All three players fit the Thibs ethos of defense players and could play significant roles on this team going forward. Caruso is a great bench guy who can play defense but can also score a few buckets. Williams hasn’t lived up to expectations but is still a solid defender at the 4 and rebounds pretty well. He does score some and if Obi is gone (always hurts to type) then some of the pressure off Randle since there won’t be any controversy over who starts at PF. Finally, Drummond has his limitations but is still a great rebounder and can even score a decent amounts. All three are on reasonable contracts although Williams will be looking for a new contract at some point, they could hopefully resign him at a reasonable level.

Bulls: The Bulls have been a disappointment this year, there’s no way around it. But their FO seems to think they’re closer than everyone thinks and also doesn’t want to blow it up. While the Bulls don’t get any FRPs in this trade, they get a couple of seconds and 3 young players to develop who bring something they don’t currently have. Obi is a player who hasn’t been allowed to meet his potential and will get the opportunity on this team and with a more flexible coach like Donovan who actually has some imagination on the offensive end. This will also benefit Hartenstein whose strengths aren’t being utilized with Thibs and is still young and can develop. They’ll also hope that they’ll be the team to finally develop Reddish who’s mostly here for salary matching.
