Suns replace Ayton with a solid, less expensive alternative at C, who can be extended for less (and does not have an extension deadline). Dallas’ 2023 1st is roughly in line with what Phoenix would’ve hoped for in a sign & trade deal, although this deal avoids the risk of Ayton leaving on a max for a team with cap space. Additionally, for a cash-strapped team, this deal saves them $5 million.

Knicks upgrade at C without having to change scheme. Ayton offers the same rim protection and vertical spacing with a more efficient post-up game to punish teams going small, and his athleticism will support the Knicks’ goals of playing faster this year. Whereas the Suns are cash-strapped, the Knicks can afford a max extension and RFA rights ensure they’ll be able to retain him next offseason with this year’s extension window already closed.
