  • Kyrie Irving (2-yr/$88 mil)

  • Seth Curry (2-yr/$25 mil)

Why do the Lakers make all of these moves?

  • First of all, the Lakers acquire a first round pick in 2024 for a very special reason- because that is the draft when Bronny James is first eligible to be drafted. Now of course, the Lakers don't have a draft pick in 2024, so the only way they can acquire Bronny is if they trade a first round pick later in the future for a pick in 2024, thus being their pick all the way in 2029 top 3 protected.

  • The Lakers are acquiring a first from the Warriors, which is why they only have to give up a 2029 first + 2 seconds to get it done. The Warriors are probably still going to be a good team during the 2023-24 season, so the Grizzlies probably wouldn't have a problem giving up that pick, which could be in the 20s, to get a future pick down the line that could be much more valuable.

  • With the Lakers acquiring Kyrie Irving & Seth Curry for Russ, their newly drafted rookie Max Christie, and 2 firsts in 2025 & 2027, the Lakers automatically lock up those guys to 2 year extensions. This is so the Lakers won't worry about losing Kyrie and Seth in 2023 free agency, and if they can succeed with those two, then those extensions will be worth while

  • And of course, the most important part of all this, is extending LeBron through 2025. This is to maximize LeBron's window to compete for a title in LA, and with the roster improvements made, this is a great extension for LeBron. LeBron could be in a situation where he could be playing with his son in 2 years, and be competing for a championship with Kyrie and AD at the same time. That's pretty good if you ask me.
