Trade details

Lakers acquire

  • Josh Richardson

  • Romeo Langford

Spurs acquire

  • Russell Westbrook

  • 2027 LAL top 5 protected first

  • 2029 LAL top 8 protected first

Why would the Lakers have to give up two first round picks to only get Josh Richardson in return?

  • Here's the thing with Russell Westbrook: he has absolutely no value to any team in the league. Any team he gets traded to would waive him, and pay him at least $40 million for him to play for a different team, if he plays at all. That in itself depreciates all the value Russ holds. If the Lakers realistically want to get off of the Russ contract, they will have to add both of their available picks for trade, in 2027 and 2029, with light protections, and receive little to no compensation in return. The Lakers aren't getting Buddy Hield/Myles Turner or Mike Conley/Bojan Bogdanovic/Rudy Gay or even Kyrie Irving back for Russ, even if they add both picks. That's because like I said, any team that acquires him will buy him out, because he is valueless, and any team is paying a stupid amount of money for him not to play. Just not worth it for a team contending for a title, unlike the Spurs, who would like the extra picks.
