Why the Kyrie Trade is Actually a Good Thing for the Nets

Looking at what they gave up: Kyrie is an elite player, currently averaging 27/5/5 on good efficiency but his unpredictability and the drama he brings to the team are obvious downsides. Trading him could have a positive effect on team chemistry now that they don’t have to worry about wether or not their 2nd best player will actually play or not. This could also Ben Simmons hopefully take a step offensively with more shots being available in Kyrie’s absence.

Looking at what they got: Dinwiddie was a favourite in Brooklyn during his first stint there and will slot in nicely at the PG position instead of Kyrie. He’s a worse scorer but still averages around 20 a game and is an as good of if not better playmaker than Kyrie. DFS would either start, or play significant bench minutes for this team and as a 3&D wing he’s a perfect fit next to the KD. Finally the picks, an unprotected 2029 1st is extremely valuable as it’s so far in the future that who knows where Luka and the Mavs will be at at that point in the future, if they don’t win a ring within the next couple years it’s very possible that Luka either leaves in free agency or demands a trade meaning the Mavs might be a lottery team in 2029. 2 2nd rounders as well are a nice addition to Brooklyn’s depleted pick stash.
