Last Season Overview: After having one of the worst records going into the All Star Break, and trading for former all star Brandon Ingram, Toronto playing against the easiest strength of schedule in the league, showed the hope that next year can be a true breakout year.

Draft

Round 1: Collin Murray-Boyles (SC)

Grade: B-

Although I was low on Murray Boyles, with his defense there was no doubt he was a lottery talent but his lack of perimeter scoring and shooting at his size is concerning in a league where teams prioritize having multiple perimeter shooters and scorers. Along with that, he is going to a Toronto team that has shot 23rd and 27th the past two seasons from three. His defense is the obvious big grab for him but outside that his archetype is redundant on a team with multiple lackluster shooters.

Round 2: Alijah Martin (FLA)

Grade: C

Similar to Murray-Boyles, both are good defensive players, but along with that being a streaky shooter. What he showed though at Florida was he was just a pure winner that makes good decisions on the floor. The low grade is that worrying shooting, along with his size where they already have multiple small guards on this roster.

Free Agency Moves

Jakob Poeltl Signs a 4 year $104M Contract

Grade: B+

Some see this as a slight overpay for a solid starting center, which is true but with the salary cap going up as much as it is this is just the salary for these rim protecting bigs, Poeltl has shown in his two and a half years back in Toronto, his ability as a short roll creator and at times big scorer, the obvious worry that fans will see is a team already having so much invested into this core adds more but his presence is night and day for Toronto.

Sandro Mamukelashvili Signs a 2 year $5.5M Contract

Grade: B+

One of the weaker positions for Toronto in this rebuild is backup big, after trading Olynk with Bruce Brown for Brandon Ingram, that left a clear hole. Mamu is different from Poeltl in how he can be a solid floor spacing big that could hypothetically play the 4 alongside him. For a contract that is practically a two year minimum it’s hard to be mad at that.

Toronto Lets Go of Team President Masai Ujiri

Grade: D

Although Masai has had some questionable moves since Toronto won in 2019, Ujiri built a true culture in Toronto that they lacked before he got there. The clear blame was change in management, making it worse was doing this move one day after the draft concluded, clearly Toronto is moving into a new era, but the absence of Ujiri will be one that I think they will regret long term.

2025-2026 Season Outlook

The big add to this team will be Ingram, who never played a game once being traded to Toronto. His ability to give this team a reliable scoring option helps them get a boost, but this team just feels not good enough for what looks like a top heavy east. For them to exceed expectations they need to hope for a more efficient Barnes, and a true breakout Quickley season.
