2022-23 Season Outlook

The Warriors, coming off an incredible championship run: their 4th in 8 seasons, have some interesting decisions to make regarding their core pieces on their roster. The Warriors obviously have Steph Curry under contract for 4 more years, going until his age 38 season in 2026-27, and he's not going anywhere for the rest of his career. As for other important core guys, such as Klay Thompson, Draymond Green, Jordan Poole, and Andrew Wiggins, their long-term futures are a little more uncertain. But, they are all under contract for the 2022-23 season, as the Warriors look to repeat and win their 5th ring in 9 years. The Warriors let go of key rotation players from their title run, such as Gary Payton II, Otto Porter Jr, Nemanja Bjelica, Juan Toscano-Anderson, and Damion Lee this offseason. However, the Warriors are going to now rely on their recent young draft picks to come off the bench and play key roles for them this coming season. These guys include no. 2 overall pick from the 2020 draft James Wiseman- who didn't play at all in their championship season, Moses Moody and Jonathan Kuminga, who were their two first round picks from the 2021 draft with loads of potential, and Jordan Poole, who is the oldest of these young guys, and has the most to offer at this current moment. It will be interesting to see how the Warriors handle these players' roles, and how they will affect Klay, Draymond, and Wiggins' minutes throughout the season. However, what's to come for the Warriors in the near future could have a lasting effect on their championship/contention window going forward.

2023 Offseason

Draymond Green's extension

To start with, Draymond Green has a $27.5 million player option for the 2023-24 season, and Draymond himself has gone on the record saying he wants a max contract after his current contract expires, whether it's on the Warriors or not. If I'm Golden State, I would not dare give Draymond Green a max contract extension, which is somewhere in the ballpark of 5-yr/$167 mil, and wouldn't expire until his age 37 season. Green is nowhere near worth around $34 million annually, not at this point in his career. The Warriors have Kuminga, who is only 20, that they're looking at as their future PF to replace Draymond, so the Warriors won't extend Draymond for that price. If Draymond is willing to take a pay cut, like how players on the Spurs did to keep their championship window open, maybe like a 3-yr/$60 mil extension, then the Warriors should extend him at that price, but not the max. Draymond means so much to the Warriors, on and off the court, he is the heart and soul of that team: the Warriors aren't the Warriors without Draymond Green, he's the most important player on that team besides Steph, because the offense and defense flow with Draymond. But, for that asking price, it's more worth it for the Warriors long term to let Draymond walk, save all that money to extend other key players on their roster, and start Kuminga at the PF position long term.

Klay Thompson's extension

This isn't as big of a pressing issue for the Warriors, because Klay still has 2 years left on his max contract he received in the 2019 offseason, but it is something to consider. Would the Warriors want to give another max contract- or something close to it, to Klay, who has fought so many injuries, doesn't appear to be the same player as he was 3 years ago, and is aging into his 30s? I don't know, it all depends on the asking price. If Klay asks for something like 2 or 3 years/ $20-25 mil annually, then the Warriors should extend, but if it's a max deal for 4+ years, then no. It's just so tough to say no to a max for Klay at the same time, because he's won 4 championships with the Warriors, and he & Steph are the greatest shooting backcourt ever, and he's also meant so much to Golden State on and off the court, like Draymond. But, if the Warriors want to keep the dynasty flowing, Klay and Dray will have to take pay cuts, or both will have to walk in favor of Poole, Wiggins, Wiseman, Kuminga and Moody potentially to get extensions, since they're all younger.

Jordan Poole and Andrew Wiggins' extensions

The Warriors are most likely going to extend these two players either this offseason or next offseason, because of their ages and their potential they each bring to Golden State. These two were crucial pieces to Golden State's title run obviously, and extending them is the best option for all parties. However, the Warriors can't give Klay, Dray, Wiggins, and Poole all max contract extensions, so they'll have to pick two players to give the max extensions to. I believe the Warriors will give Poole and Wiggins max extensions, and Klay and Dray will either take pay cuts, or leave in free agency. That's just how the NBA works, there isn't enough money under the hard cup to give all these players max contract extensions, it just isn't feasible.

Conclusion- what does all this mean?

Basically, the Warriors have a lot of tough decisions to make over the next year or two regarding contract extensions, trades, and free agency. The Warriors can't give out 4 max contract extensions, and they're already paying Steph Curry the supermax, so the Warriors have to pick and choose who to extend. I believe the Warriors will choose to extend Poole and Wiggins, and hope to extend Klay and Draymond on smaller, more team friendly contracts to keep them on the roster- as well as staying under the hard cap. The Warriors will have to decide on either keeping their veteran core of Steph, Klay, and Dray together for the long run, or go fully into the youth movement with Poole, Kuminga, Wiseman, Moody, and even Wiggins at the back end of Steph's career. It'll be interesting to see what the Warriors decide to do going forward.
