AFC East Post Draft Analysis

AFC East:

Patriots:

29 - OG Cole Strange

50 - WR Tyquan Thornton

85 - CB Marcus Jones

121 - CB Jack Jones

127 - RB Pierre Strong Jr

137 - QB Bailey Zappe

183 - RB Kevin Harris

200 - DT Sam Roberts

210 - G Chasen Hines

245 - OL Andrew Stueber

Analysis: The Patriots had likely the most confusing and potentially worst drafts this year. Starting with the offense, the Patriots always draft a QB and add Bailey Zappe. Zappe can be a solid backup and profiles somewhat similarly to Jarrett Stidham as a prospect. New England added two running backs in the draft, with Pierre Strong likely making the roster as a speedy change of pace to Damien Harris and Rhamondre Stevenson. Kevin Harris will compete with Divine Ozigbo and JJ Taylor for the final running back spot while James White starts the year on IR. I really like the Pierre Strong pick as he was my #4 ranked running back and he falls into a really solid, stress free situation in New England. In the second round, New England added Tyquan Thornton, a speedster from Baylor. I really don’t like this pick as he has no real skills besides being really fast. He’ll have kick returning potential which is solid but not worth a second round pick at all. Also they still have Jakobi Meyers, Kendrick Bourne, Devante Parker, and Nelson Agoholar, meaning that Thornton has to beat one of those guys out for PT as well. The Patriots also added three offensive lineman in Cole Strange, Chasen Hines, and Andrew Steuber. I actually don’t mind the Cole Strange pick as much as most do because Strange is a really smart and physical lineman that I view as a lock to be a four year starter for the Patriots. If you don’t like the positional value, I get that but Strange is a solid player. Stueber also is a late round offensive lineman that I view as a guy that could potentially be the Patriots sixth man on the O line. On defense, the Patriots didn’t do a lot as they had a pretty darn good defense coming into the draft. I especially like Jack Jones and Marcus Jones in New England. Marcus Jones profiles as a slot corner that brings special teams potential while Jack Jones can start next year once Jalen Mills and Malcolm Butler move on to FA. Overall, I expect that Strange starts Day 1 while the Jones’ both will have chances to start in the next two years. Unless Strong and Thornton really impress early on, I don’t see them starting in the near future for New England but both will be solid gadget players for Belichek. Fine but not stellar draft for Belichek.

Dolphins:

102 - LB Channing Tindall

125 - WR Erik Enzukama

224 - LB Cameron Goode

225 - QB Skylar Thompson

Analysis: To start on offense, the Dolphins chose Skylar Thompson, and I don’t love the pick when Carson Strong is still available along with Brock Purdy. They also added WR Erik Enzukama. The Dolphins are really loading up on speed at wide receiver this offseason with the additions of Tyreek Hill and Jaylen Waddle. I would have rather seen them add Romeo Doubs or a bigger body like that, but I don’t mind the player at all. On defense, I love the addition of Channing Tindall as a nickel and dime linebacker next to Jerome Baker and Elandon Roberts at middle linebacker. I see Tindall as a Jerome Baker insurance policy and a potential third down sub for Elandon Roberts in obvious passing situations. Enzukama is also just another safety net unless Hill, Wilson, or Jaylen Waddle were to get hurt. Solid draft of depth here for Miami and is a very above average draft for Miami.

Bills: 23 - CB Kaiir Elam

63 - RB James Cook

89 - LB Terrel Bernard

148 - WR Khalil Shakir

180 - P Matt Araiza

185 - CB Christian Benford

209 - OG Lecitus Smith

231 - LB Baylon Spector

Analysis: On offense, the Bills added a physical runner in James Cook. Rated as my #3 RB, Cook will bring a happy medium between the shifty yet undersized Devin Singletary and the large yet slow Zack Moss. Cook’s ceiling gives the Bills a new way to finish games off in the second half of the game by just wearing down the opposing defense with Allen and Cook. At WR, they get a steal in Khalil Shakir. He can be another nice deep threat for Josh Allen and his ceiling is to be right there with Gabriel Davis as the Bills #2 receiving option. On the offensive line, the Bills add a solid guard in Lecitus Smith at 209. Smith can be insurance for Cody Ford, Roger Saffold, and Ryan Bates in the guard room. ON defense, the Bills add physical outside corner Kaiir Elam. He can start Day 1 opposite Tre’Davius White and his ceiling would be as a really reliable corner 2 on the outside. At LB the Bills reach a bit on Terrel Bernard (love Kyle Brandt’s intro by the way). He can be a sub package LB that subs in for Matt Milano in passing situations. Finally, the punt god himself heads to Buffalo. While it’s a terrible fit, he still is a stud and will be worth every penny he gets paid. In total, Buffalo adds a Day 1 starter in Elam to play opposite Tre’Davius White. Cook can bring a new element to the Bills offense while Shakir and Bernard can provide some solid upside and play in certain situations right now. Matt Araiza will be a top 3 punter right away for Buffalo, and they add three solid depth pieces at the end of the draft. I really like the draft as a whole for Buffalo and think it could push them to a AFC Championship win.

Jets:

4 - CB Sauce Gardner

10 - WR Garrett Willson

26 - END Jermaine Johnson

36 - RB Breece Hall

101 - TE Jeremy Ruckertt

111 - OT Max Mitchell

117 - DE Michael Clemons

Analysis: With Zach Wilson as the guy at QB, the Jets set out on a mission to add the necessary playamkers for Wilson to be surrounded by. First, they add speedster Garrett Willson. I actually really don’t like this pick as I see him and Elijah Moore as very similar prospects and I would rather see a trade up for Drake London or Treylon Burks instead of another deep threat. Also, I don’t view Willson as a top 10 prospect really at all. At RB, the Jets add Breece Hall. I don’t love it from the perspective of two straight second round choices used on running backs, but I do think Hall will be great for the Jets. In the best case scenario for NY, Hall and Michael Carter become a really solid 1-2 punch that can consistently take pressure off of Zach Willson. At TE, the Jets added Jeremy Ruckertt, a TE from Ohio State. He is a really balanced tight end and will come in a start day 1. He can be a solid red zone target for Zach Willson and he will get to play next to a deep threat in CJ Uzomah at TE while Ruckertt takes the short yardage catches. On the offensive line, the Jets added Max Mitchell. I love this pick as both Mekhi Becton and George Fant are often injured, so chances are good that Mitchell will get a shot and if he plays well, you got a starting tackle in the fourth round. Defensively, the Jets added two defensive ends in Jermaine Johnson and Michael Clemons. Considering the Jets thought about choosing Johnson at 4, getting him at 26 is a steal. Carl Lawson, Johnson, and John Franklin-Meyers make up a sneaky good pass rush now in NY. Clemons wasn’t a guy I was too into as a prospect, but he is a plenty serviceable fourth rusher that plays ~20 percent of the defensive snaps. The Jets also added a true lockdown corner on the outside in Sauce Gardner. There was a glaring need there, and Sauce will get an opportunity to go against the NFLs best receivers from Day 1. Overall, New York added a number 1 corner and receiver, a really good and high ceiling end, a stud running back, and depth at TE and OT. I would be totally psyched about this draft as a Jets fan, particularly the later picks.

Superlatives:

Best draft: Jets

Worst draft: Patriots

Best pick: James Cook at 63

Worst pick: Tyquan Thornton at 50

Sneaky good pick: Max Mitchell at 111

Fantasy players to watch: Garrett Wilson, Breece Hall, James Cook

Best late round pick: Lecitus Smith at 209
