Moves awesome for his size, good post bag and feel. Can even handle the ball very well for his position and good passer. Shot mechanics look very solid. Very fun intriguing prospect should be higher on boards

HANSEN YANG

HISTERICALCHEES COMBINE APPROVED

Position/Archetype: Post and Pass 5

College: (Pro) Qingdao Double Star Eagles - China

Pros:

  • Size: 7'1 guy with a 9'3 standing reach is very strong measurements for a center. The size has always been obvious to me watching him post up and boxing out he seems to use it somewhat well as a rebounder but needs to use It more to score in my opinion.

  • Passing: Really impressive passes in the combine and in CBA, spots cutter really well in the high post and places it really well. Great anticipation. this is where I see a lot of upside in his game with the passing which we've seen a few guys be able to do and be stars in the league as 5s. question is will he ever find a place to be able to use this to a high level.

  • Post play and handle: One thing thats become clear to me Is he has great feel for the game, nice handle and has some neat moves he's been able to use in the CBA which gives me some Sengun vibes but again how is this gonna compare to when he's against NBA post defenders, I don't know.

  • Rebounding: Uses his body really well as a rebounder to get board and box out well and ends up getting huge numbers. I will say this probably won't have any problems becoming an NBA skill, can't teach size.

Cons:

  • Perimeter Defence: Not mobile enough for me to see him doing anything really on the perimeter as a defender and thats gonna hold him back when he does have to match up with this new age of mobile centers we've seen coming through recently.

  • Three point shooting: I don't doubt the confidence and I think the form is ok at least but it definitely isn't falling right now, and I'm currently not gonna bet on it ever being a high level skill but there's something there but right now I'd say he has to work on this to be a more effective high post layer to reach his max potential.

  • Athleticism: Slow and hasn't had to be very high level on this end to be effective in the CBA unlike how he will have to be in the NBA which is why I have some question defensively not only on the perimeter or how strong the interior might be, even if he was the best defender ninth CBA last year.

  • Intangibles: Key point is most second round talents don't get a second contract, if you get one your in the top 5% and with upside swings like this, its hard for me to think of him as a safe bet here. It's hard cause I really enjoy watching him, he's a super fun watch in the combine he was too. So I urge you, just enjoy the footage, I don't think we will see it much after the draft.

NBA Pro Comp: Less Mobile Alperen Sengun

Projection: He's an upside swing but I definitely see him proving people wrong or just crashing out the league or never even getting there in the first place. I choose not to project him, it's just too hard but im leaning crashing out as of now, most guys just don't work out.

Comp: Boban Marjanovic

  • absolute monster at 7’1”, 250

  • uses his size and length effectively as he should for easy efficient looks inside whether that be on second chance points, cuts, or post-ups

  • covers a ton of ground defensively inside; has surprisingly good hand eye coordination and racks a ton of blocks often without having to commit to leaving his feet

  • poor reaction time even as an interior defender; results in worse rim protection than his intimidating stature would suggest

  • pretty much a non-factor as a jump shooter and doesn’t shoot often. poor free throw shooter at just under 67%

  • good passer from most anywhere; doesn’t have the flashiest bag of passes but often makes good choices and doesn’t force issues

  • has all the tools to be a good screener at the next level

  • doesn’t try to do more than he’s capable of

Yang is a massive Chinese 7-footer who scores with old-school craft, passes well, and cleans the glass. But how much his slow feet and lack of shooting range can be improved will determine whether he can stick in the pros.

Pros:

Post scoring

Passing

Interior Finishing

Cons:

Perimeter Defense

Interior Defense

Shooting

Mindset

Comparison: Nikola Vucevic

(25/04) TBC

Put up 16.6 PPG, 10.5 RPB, 3.0 APG, 2.6 BPG in the CBA. Won CBA DPOY at 18. 2x all star and All-CBA first team member. ROY too. Very accomplished.

Clearly huge, not just tall but wide too.

Nice little spin move in post, not afraid to use his size and get physical.

Not an NBA level athlete. Flat footed. Not much verticality. Poor conditioning as of now, struggled to keep energy high during scrimmage games.

When guarding smaller players in pick and roll there's a good chance he drops too low, or gets exploited by their speed and ends up behind them.

Willing passer who makes some tough angles, a bit turnover prone. His play at the combine really proved how high level his passing is, its genuinely another level.

Bulldozer when rolling to the rim

Free throw form looks fine, doesn't shoot at a high percentage. Shot 1 three a game at 33.3%, not bad at all.

Not great touch when it comes to floaters, hooks.

Doesn't finish through contact like I'd like.

I think he's a comparable talent to Derik Queen, but trading agility for size.

Uses his overwhelming size extremely well on both ends. Bullies players until he gets to his spots, boxes out ferociously. Players get pushed around so much they front him, then he uses his length and craftiness to get the ball anyway.

The combine cycle has seen a huge boost to his stock. He looked great in the combine scrimmages, clearly an elite game processor offensively with good defensive instincts. His pick and roll game looked really great. Movement looked really good too.

I'm trying not to be too recency-biased, but Hansen Yang looks like he could easily return top 10 value in this class.

Comp: Alperen Sengun/slow Marc Gasol

Two way development project. Bigs are so so sought after right now for thirsty teams. I could see some desperate team throwing them into end of rotation.
