Mainly a catch and shoot/slasher. Can't really provide much on his own offensively himself but served as a terrific off ball player this past year. Plays very hard on defense but is just ok defensively. Unfortunately tore his all which very well could tank his stock

Would be higher if not for the Achilles tear. Decent bet as a 3-and-D guy, but it's hard to imagine any team taking the plunge now.

Strengths:

  • Good size for the wing at 6 feet 6.25 without shoes with a 6-foot-10.25 wingspan. Has a solid 203-pound frame and a good 8-foot-8.5 standing reach. Looks the part of a wing even though he largely played as an off-ball, mismatch four at Oklahoma.

  • Most of his shot attempts came out of catch-and-shoot situations, drives off heavy closeouts, out in transition, pick-and-pop situations or off cuts. Very rarely put the ball on the ground more than a couple of times before shooting. Also was effective at filling lanes out in transition to make life for his teammates easier. Got a ton of easy points.

  • The key skill for Moore in the NBA will be the jumper. Didn't take a ton of 3s this year but was effective when he took them. Hit 39.1% of his 3s over the last two years at Oklahoma. Almost all those were off the catch. Has a pretty jumper that should translate to the NBA. Does a good job getting his feet set and organized before the catch. Has good bend before the catch. Has a bit of a deep ball dip for rhythm, but the shot is a pure one-motion jumper that comes out of his hand cleanly. Even though he didn't shoot them at volume, I think he'll hit shots.

  • Moore is reliable in a variety of situations as a shooter. Hit pick-and-pop 3s with ease as a partner for Fears this year. Was also effective in spot-up situations when he either relocated into a shot before the catch or merely spaced to wait for the shot. Generally was happy to hang out in the corners, which will be useful for NBA teams.

  • I respected Moore's effort on defense this year. He's unlikely to be an impact guy on that end in the NBA, but he's an active on-ball defender who seemed to take pride in his defense. Regularly got down deep in a defensive stance and tried to cut off drives. Was somewhat switchable, essentially taking on all corners on the wing from power guards to shifty wings to college fours. Was comfortable switching onto ones but could occasionally get caught in-between steps and get beaten.

  • Covered solid amount of ground on defense, where his long strides would help him get out to shooters after having to help in the lane. Given that ground coverage is so essential in today's NBA, his ability to get around the court could be valuable. Generally knew exactly where he was supposed to rotate and was engaged in the play. Will help the helper and be available on the string defensively.

Areas for Improvement:

  • Not a ton of pop athletically. Wasn't explosive this year, particularly around the rim on his drives. Had some impressive off-ball dunks after cuts and out in transition, but the leaping ability didn't feel all that functional when he was in traffic. He also has high hips which can hinder him on defense.

  • Did not see much this year from Moore in terms of ball skills. I worry about what he'll do if a defender sells out to contest his shot. Everything tended to be in a straight line at the same speed. Didn't have any sort of in-between game with a pull-up midrange jumper or a floater. Does not have much of a pull-up game. Didn't look comfortable relocating into 3s. Took only 13 shots off dribble this season.

  • When he tried to get to the rim, it usually involved him loading up and trying to put his shoulder into someone before reverse pivoting to get to his right or a finish over his left shoulder. More of a power player than a skill player. Was very predictable, and the results looked that way in half court. Made only 51.4% of his attempts in the half court at the rim. Got there about four times per game, which was good. But when he attacked closeouts, he wasn't effective.

  • Has tunnel vision on his drives when he attacked closeouts. Rarely looked to see if he had teammates open. Had a negative assist-to-turnover rate of 0.6 to 1.6 per game, which came because he rarely made passes outside of an extra one along the chain on the perimeter. Needs to get better at understanding where the help is coming from and making a read to his open teammates. Essentially non-existent in his game right now.

  • High hips were an issue defensively, as it was harder for him to have an effective first stride on that end. If an offensive player could lull him to sleep with a jab step or hang dribble and get him back on his heels, he would struggle to react before that player's first step and he'd get beaten.

  • Struggled with closeouts in college because of that. Would plant to get out to his man, and then struggle to contain the closeout because of how hard it was for him to change direction and flip his hips. In the NBA, the ability to cover ground is more important than containing the drive given you need to stop the shooter from taking a 3, so there is some potential for value. But all of this probably hinders him from being a plus on defense.

  • Did not make his presence felt in terms of overall disruption. Didn't show great hand-eye coordination in passing lanes or when he'd rotate over from the weak side when trying to contest a shot. Doesn't have that twitchiness to react to what's happening around him in a quick manner.

Summary:

The idea for Moore is that of a true 3-and-D player in the NBA. He has the size and length that NBA teams look for from this position, and he genuinely cares on the defensive end. I believe that he can shoot off the catch. The NBA now is about so much more than shooting and defending. You need to make quick decisions and counter what opposing teams do try to take away your skills. Moore's ball skills and passing ability are questionable enough that he has a lot of work to do. He's worth giving a two-way and developing for a year, but he needs to make strides in those areas before becoming an effective NBA player.
