JOAN BERINGER

Position/Archetype: Athletic Defensive 5

College: (Pro) Cedevita Olimpija - Slovenia

Pros:

  • Athleticism: Jumps super high, quick player and very controlled, mobile legs and great Lateral Quickness. Allows him to move well on the perimeter defensively. He is one of the most athletic Bigs in the the draft by a lot, allows for a high ceiling.

  • Blocking Instincts: 1.4 BPG in around 17MPG as a pro is very good, he tracks the ball very well off the backboard, swats with a lot of ease and stays with his man well enough that it creates a lot more swatting opportunities for himself, this is the skill most people will draft him for.

  • Defensive Versatility: as previously mentioned, he has great lateral quickness, he's pretty confident moving on the perimeter as a smaller center, he will be able to guard potentially down to the three of defence and maybe handle himself vs guards when needed. won't get picked on.

  • Age and Body: 18 and still has a lot of room to grow and fill out, rumoured between 6'9 and 6'11, probably on the lower end but he uses it well and is pretty aware of it, hard body on screens but a lot of potential in that.

  • Level of competition: Europe is much easier to project from the college more than often, smarter offences and defences regularly which helps us put stats into context better and see what's translatable.

Cons:

  • Strength: Not very strong, pretty skinny and not a lot of meat on him, due to his age I doubt this remains as much of a problem for him, I think he will fill out pretty well and NBA teams all put this guy on a meal plan and get him in the gym, don't be surprised if we see hi put on 20lbs, but definitely hurts his inside offensive game, bit of a pushover.

  • Hack A Beringer: 58% FT shooter, gonna get the Mitchell Robinson treatment we've seen in the playoffs and that makes it really hard to view him as a feasible offensive option right now, has to develop this closer to a consistent number to find competetive minutes and regular meaningful rotation spots.

  • Spacing: can knockdown the certain mid range shot but a non existent 3pt shooter in the modern day tells me he might get lost in a transitioning game, now he could develop a shot since he's so young but I doubt it ever becomes a regular used thing and doubt it comes anytime soon.

  • Low IQ: Not a smart offensive or defensive prospect in general, common for younger guys like this but concerning none the less for these types of prospects.

  • Turnovers: not a tonne of turnovers but more turnovers than assists with relatively poor creation in the post due to his lack of strength

  • Low floor: its really hard to develop the size and offensive bag a guy like this needs even if he is so young, the combination of lower end IQ and poor shooting touch tells me this will be a guy thats likely lost in a developing league who would thrive 20 years ago, but he again is so young and the blocking is so impressive he will probably find a role somewhere and could develop his way to an effective role.

NBA Pro Comp: Jericho Sims, Nerlens Noel

Projection: I see him being a 3rd In the depth chart center, maybe a 10-8th man backup center. A likely bust though, but if he works out he can be a premium shot blocker and pick and roll guy.

  • Rim runner in transition and the half court sets

  • Very athletic

  • Can score at the rim

  • Ceiling: ALL-NBA

  • Floor: Out of League

  • Expectation: Bench

  • What to Expect: I don't know what to expect, I'll need to see more of him and how he translates first. But if he can translate the potential is definitely there

P&R lob threat with a lot of upside, but he can't really do anything outside the paint yet. He runs the floor very well. Insanely raw.

Comp: Bol Bol/Kai Jones

  • 6’10” with a +5 wingspan

  • quick twitch athleticism along with great positional speed, coordination and mobility

  • super versatile defensively w/ quick feet and has high potential as a shot blocker/helpside defender

  • great overall motor

  • high upside as a lob threat; solid cutting instincts and simply a physical threat on the roll

  • super raw and lacks a lot of basic fundamentals as a late bloomer to the game

  • puts the ball in harms way far too often when attempting to handle the ball

  • lack of shot creation/counters as a scorer; footwork could improve and post game could develop

  • fairly high spacing upside, but the jumper seems very erratic for now

  • atrocious free throw shooter (53%)

  • very turnover prone and doesn’t read the floor well with the ball

  • lack of core strength and any muscle whatsoever causes him to struggle in traffic/in the post battle on both sides of the ball; avoids contact

(30/4) TBC

Raw center from France who has the upside to be a lob threat for years to come. 3rd youngest in the class.

Beringer is listed at 6'9, but I assume he's grown since he was last measured. He is 18 after all.

Super lengthy, doesn't struggle to contest shots around the rim at all. Still skinny though, and doesn't strike fear into the opposing team.

Beringer doesn't have the elite bounce of some other smaller centers, nor the developed offensive skills. He's a bit of a project.

Lacks awareness on defense, gets caught ball watching. Slow feet when guarding drivers and pick and roll.

Beringer doesn't look to create shots at all, relying on put backs and lobs for his buckets. Struggles with finishing when defended.

Good awareness with rebounding, slides into gaps to have better positioning and understands when a shot will miss.

Comp: Jericho Sims/Robert Williams

Beringer began playing basketball only three years ago, which makes him a raw project, but also makes his natural talents all the more impressive. He’s a center but has the quickness of a guard, giving him immense defensive versatility to build on for years to come.

Pros:

Defensive versatility

Rim finishing

Cons:

Frame

Turnovers

Shooting

Defensive fundamentals

Comparisons: Clint Capela, Nerlens Noel

This is my favorite big in the draft. And it is not just because he is french, and I know he is not close to Wemby as Raynaud. He is a switchable guy that can do big man stuff and run in transition. If had a an average 3 or if we could develop that. He is the steal of the draft. I do not see him sliding far in the draft. I think ESPN has ranking right. We might have to pull the trigger at 14 if we want him. Which means no wing, if we do not trade up from 38.
