Cash Considerations
Let’s look at the financial side of things and why this move makes sense. Taking on Smith and Connaughton’s contracts would bring the Pelicans' total payroll to $178,273,279, putting them just over the first apron limit. To manage Connaughton’s pricey contract, the Pelicans would likely need to use most of their trade exception from the Valanciunas sign-and-trade with Washington.
When evaluating the value of this potential deal, I was inspired by the Mavericks-Kings trade on draft night in 2023, which involved Richaun Holmes's contract and O-Max for cash considerations. This trade showed how smart financial risks can strengthen a team for the long term. The Mavericks proved this further by trading Holmes for Daniel Gafford, who played a crucial role in their finals run.
Now, why would New Orleans be interested in this? Tyler Smith, a Louisiana native, could be exactly what the Pelicans need against Oklahoma City. He’s a 6’11 stretch five with a 7’1 wingspan, offering help-side defense and decent rim protection. Although Connaughton’s contract is hefty, he’s far from a liability. He’s a capable player with playoff experience and a championship ring.
As for Connaughton’s expensive contract, he’s not just an ordinary player; he was a key part of several contending Bucks teams and started as shooting guard on their 2021 championship squad. His contract is also in line with those of hometown big men like Robert Williams and Mitchell Robinson. If either becomes available, attaching Connaughton, a first-round pick, and Lewis Jr.’s trade exception might be enough to make the deal happen.

Alondes Williams
Alondes Williams 1st year is fully guaranteed, year 2 and year 3 are non guaranteed. Alondes Williams, a Milwaukee native, has consistently impressed with his basketball skills. According to Skyforce head coach Kasib Powell, "He can reach any spot on the floor he aims for, excels at making precise passes and smart plays, and is a driving force for our team. His competitive edge on defense and his ability to spark the game make him truly formidable."
Williams has showcased his NBA potential with two impressive 40-point games, highlighting his exceptional athleticism, remarkable touch, and balance that lead to spectacular finishes at the rim. His effectiveness driving downhill further emphasizes his skill set. Williams stood out in summer league with his ability to read the pick and roll, making smart decisions with remarkable consistency. His vision on the court helps him anticipate defensive movements and exploit openings, resulting in precise, effective passes that often lead to high-quality scoring opportunities. This skill, combined with his natural playmaking talent, makes him an outstanding passer who can significantly impact the flow of the game
Following the Sign-and-Trade. sign McGee to a minimum contract
To me, it’s a no-brainer. As a three-time NBA Champion with both the Golden State Warriors and Los Angeles Lakers, McGee has consistently shown he can contribute significantly to winning basketball with his elite rim-protecting skills and exceptional athleticism.
Even this past year in Sacramento, while it was clear he’s past his prime, the 36-year-old still proved to be a solid contributor. He posted highly efficient averages of 26.5 points, 18.1 rebounds, and 2.9 blocks per 100 possessions, all while maintaining an impressive 109 defensive rating through 46 games.
Plus, the team currently has no backup centers. Adding McGee would address this gap, giving them a reliable option who can bring experience and depth to the position.
