If this deal does go down, it’s likely that Harden declined his player option and left the Sixers in free agency. It’s a looming possibility. Rumors abound that Harden is interested in reuniting with his Houston Rockets. Even if that doesn’t come to pass, he could leave the Sixers for another contender. Let’s assume he does. An Embiid trade request is likely to follow. The Sixers will be left without his co-star, and without the resources to acquire him. In that event, flipping Embiid for Brown, Williams III and two first-round picks make sense.
