In part 1 the Celtics traded Jrue Holiday to get under the 2nd apron, while also acquiring F Derrick Jones Jr. This was necessary for 2 reasons. First, there have already been reports that new Celtics ownership would like to get under the 2nd apron for financial purposes. Second, the Celtics can’t currently trade for Giannis because one of the rules for the 2nd apron is that you cannot take on more money than you send out. Giannis is making barely more money than Tatum and Brown so giving up one of them for him is financially impossible in a trade. Another rule is that you cannot aggregate players in a trade, which basically means that you cannot combine salaries to make up the cost of the player that you’re receiving via trade. By doing the trades in the 1st and 2nd parts of my Celtics Off-Season Plan, the Celtics stay under the 2nd apron while also pairing Tatum with Giannis on the Celtics.
In this trade the Celtics trade SG Jaylen Brown, C/F Xavier Tillman, and 2 unprotected FRP’s for F Giannis Antetokounmpo. Again this trade is only financially possible if the Celtics make a trade or multiple trades to get under the 2nd apron. Obviously when you’re trading a franchise guy like Giannis there really isn’t an equal return in value. I believe that he only gets traded if he requests a trade or they mutually decide that it’s best for both parties to move on. Bucks receive SG Jaylen Brown who has shown at times that he has the capability of being a # 1 option and is also under contract long term. Bucks also receive 2 unprotected FRP’s from the Celtics.
