Why Boston does it:
Vucevic would fit so well in Mazzulla’s offense especially with his ability to space the floor. He’d also give the Celtics a big who can really help on the glass too. Best thing for Boston is his contract is done this year, so at his age (36 next year) they’d probably be able to resign him for short money the next few years.
Why Chicago does it:
The biggest driver for me here is I probably just don’t see Vucevic returning to Chicago after this season. He’s 35, if he has any desire to win - he’d probably look elsewhere. So realistically the Bulls are moving the 2.5 months left of him for a swap (that’ll probably go unused), three 2nd rounders, and some filler contracts in Barnes and Waters (both of which are off the books at the end of the year). Unless they think a team is willing to give up more, this isn’t a terrible return to offload Vucevic.
Why San Antonio does it:
Simons provides instant offense to their bench as they gear up for a playoff run. Barnes just doesn’t mesh well with that roster anymore and he’ll he gone at the end of the year anyway. This can basically be a test run for Simons to see how he fairs as a 6th man for them to see if they want to invest in bringing him back during the offseason. Worst case, all you gave up in the long run was a 2nd rounder.
