Curry to Boston (Part I)

SUCCESS

Going to do this in two parts - the first being the trade for Curry, the second being the trade to get under the luxury tax after.

For Boston it’s very simple, you take Paul George (can’t be aggregated with other players since he was recently traded for) and a package of picks .. ship them out for Steph and call it a day.

For Golden State it’s not as simple, you’re moving a franchise star (best player in team history) - but he’s a guy now in his twilight years with quickly diminishing trade value at his age.

The package of picks I settled on was the following:

  • 2027 BOS 1st

  • 2028 BOS 1st Swap Rights (GS can take swap with the worse of Boston / San Antonio’s picks)

  • 2031 Swap Rights (Golden State gets the best two of Boston, Philly, and its own 1st in the 2031 draft)

  • Three 2nds in 2028, 2030, and 2032

Why I think this is reasonable is Steph isn’t worth an earth shattering pick at his age, but respectfully the Warriors will want quality draft capital for him. So I’m giving Golden State the Celtics 1st outright next year and then giving them the chance for a serious draft in 2031 if either Boston or Philly aren’t great the year leading up.

The 2028 pick probably won’t convey since San Antonio already owns Boston’s swap rights and Golden State won’t be left with much to chose from, but the three 2nds on top are nice since two of them are a choice of 3 teams’ 2nd rounders meaning they should be in the 30s.

For next steps - Boston will probably look to shed more money (I’ll propose this too) and reset their bench depth. On the other hand, the Warriors might end up buying out PG.
