What’s next for Cayden Boozer?

OK, so I know we all saw what atrocity played out last night in the final ten seconds. Absurd. And everything will unfortunately be put back on Cayden Boozer, if he had just made the pass. But don’t let this deter you from the super efficient 15-6-5 ball game he pulled out last night. But the real question is what’s next?

See the thing is, Cayden is in a difficult spot. First off, let’s say he stays at Duke. He’ll be living with the guilt of the pass his whole time, whilst being behind incoming five star Deron Rippey Jr, with Foster running it back and maybe Darren Harris, Nik Khamenia or even Dame Sarr staying. But the real question is, does he even want to be here? It’s often a trend for twins to commit to the same place and play together (Thompson, Ratliff twins etc). Think about it this way, he could go to some mid major and ball out like he could’ve done this year had he not prioritized his brothers choice.

But then again, Duke has done this multiple times, taking guards and developing them fully. Look at Caleb, look at Nolan Smith, Jeremy Roach or Tre Jones, all prime examples of what role he could find himself in next year. Also he’d be betraying his brother and his dad’s Alma mater. But also, is the opportunity there? How many teams would take him on? And also wouldn’t it absolutely suck to leave a Blue Blood for some solid school just to help your career whilst your brother is gonna be ROTY?

So then it comes, should he declare for the draft? As someone who’s watched Duke extensively this year, he doesn’t feel NBA ready. And with the talent pool in college basketball increasing, how many teams would take Cayden over say a Killyan Toure or a Juke Harris perhaps? He’s too raw and has shown major flaws in his game. Can Cayden take it to the next level?

Or should he stay with the history and storylines on him at Duke? It’s almost reminiscent of Kihei Clark. Someone who had a phenomenal career at Virginia for four years, was the catalyst for that one saving pass to Mamadi Diakite to tie it up against Purdue. But then the Furman game happened and it ruined everything for him and his stock. Should Cayden try and just move on? Or live with it? Or find somewhere else? Whatever happens, I can imagine he regrets it as whilst his brother is being paid dozens of millions to play in a place like Brooklyn or Washington, he’s still a college kid.
