Why Signing Trevion Williams To The Main Roster Needs To Be A Top Priority For Boston

The Celtics proved this postseason that they have what it takes to compete at the highest level. Tatum and Brown are as dynamic of a scoring duo as any pair in the league, and Marcus Smart quarterbacks arguably the best defense in the league. Many may look at this team and question how they can get any better than what they are right now. The answer to that is Trevion Williams.

Williams is a veteran big man from Purdue who has been a dependable low post scorer throughout his college career. He uses his array of post moves and great footwork to score inside. He’s a very strong and imposing force on the interior despite only being listed at 6’9. He uses this size to pull down a fair amount of rebounds. Despite not putting up great STOCKS numbers I would still say he is a decent-good defender.

Along with his interior game he has also shown quite a bit of ability on the perimeter. Throughout his college career he shot 31% from 3 on only 29 attempts. Despite this slightly below average performance he showed to be a much better shooter than that at the combine. Some may call this a fluke, but I believe this to be a result of him not really being allowed to shoot at Purdue.

In addition to his interior game and shooting I also see him as quite a good passer for his size. Due to the amount of post touches he has received throughout his career he is adept at finding the open man out of the post up. While at the combine he showed that this ability can translate pretty well to the perimeter as well. He was impressive handling the ball at a limited capacity in the half court. This was mostly in dribble hand offs or from the top of the key. He also hit cutters on back doors a few times.

You may be asking yourself how this helps the Celtics… well no worries, I’m at that part now! I believe the most underrated piece to the Celtics team this season has been Al Horford. Despite his horrific contract he plays a key role for the team. His ability to stretch the floor, punish mismatches, and make simple passes offensively can not be taken for granted. Defensively he doesn’t do anything special on the stat sheet, but he is arguably the most key part to Boston’s switch everything defense. His ability to use his strength on centers down low but also be able to move his feet with guards and wings on the perimeter is very important.

With Horford being 36 and on the last year of his contract the Celtics are in a good spot to resign him on a team friendly deal. The issue of course with this is there is no guarantee that he can continue playing at this level as he continues to age. Enter Trevion Williams. I believe with a couple of years of development behind Al Horford he will be able to step into that role and perform at an even higher level than Horford has. I think he will be able to provide just as much ability as a shooter and defender with even more ability as a passer, ball handler, and interior scorer. His ability to score out of the post in a variety of ways could be an interesting wrinkle in the offense as now less focus will be on Tatum and Brown. His ball handling could allow him to initiate offense through dribble handoffs similar to that of a Draymond Green.

Basically what I’m getting at is with Trevion Williams the possibilities are endless. That being said… Brad Stevens please sign this man to the main roster before it is too late!
