Hot take: NBA coaches don’t matter as much as they are anticipated

People nowadays argue that coaching is all that important and whilst it used to be a huge part of the game, given certain player niches, specialties and weaknesses. But nowadays, considering everyone is some Jalen Williams sort of all aroundness, with low weaknesses (unless ur a big, in which you’re in a typical role), coaching is overrated. We’ve seen guys coach successful teams but suck elsewhere. Think Doc Rivers in 08 or Luke Walton for the first 25 in 16. In a sport like American football or Baseball, the plays run the game. But in basketball, the player can wave off the coach and do what they want. Hence, coaching is overrated. Besides, how do you truly decipher a great coach over a mediocre coach in this era? How do we know Daigneault or Spo would be a good coach elsewhere? I’d say coaching really matters less than 10% in a game in today’s league.
