Divisive prospects: Where do you stand?

Every draft class has its fair share of prospects who have an insane draft range because no one can seem to agree on their value and potential. Let's take a look at a few.

Nikola Topic: Depending on who you ask, Topic is either the draft's lone franchise PG or an overrated prospect with concerning shooting, defense and relatively weak competition. No one questions his passing ability and size at the position, but as an overall talent, some question whether he should be a top 3 pick. I have him at 8 in my recent mock, but you can justify taking him anywhere between 1-10.

Ryan Dunn: To many, Dunn is one of the best defensive players at the college level in recent memory, if not ever. He can guard 1 through 4 and just does some jawdropping things on that side of the ball. However, on offense, he's a liability when asked to do anything other than catch lobs. He's a terrible free throw shooter. I've seen mocks with him everywhere between 10-29. Offense is king in today's NBA. It's not that defense doesn't matter, but if someone is virtually unplayable on offense, it's hard to justify using a high pick on that player. Part of it may just be UVA's snail's pace of an offense, but Dunn's done little to prove there's a path forward to being even an average offensive player. I have him at 20 in my recent mock, but I may drop him a few spots before June.

Zach Edey: There's no denying Edey's dominance at the college level, but his fit at the NBA level is questionable. He's taken two threes all season, and he's painfully slow at times. Similarly dominant college players like Luka Garza have not gotten much burn in the league. However, what distinguishes Edey from Garza is his above-average passing ability for a big. That aspect of his game, along with 2024 being a weaker class, could be why some see Edey as a first rounder. Meanwhile, some mocks have him in the 40s or 50s. I have him at 35 in my latest mock.

Zvonimir Ivisic: When you're 7'2 and can shoot, you're undeniably going to have scouts intrigued. However, much like last year, what's holding Ivisic back is a limited sample of play. When he committed to Kentucky, there were fears Calipari wouldn't know what to do with him, and those fears have proven true. I've seen Ivisic all over the place on boards, which makes sense because he's still such a mystery.
