JASE RICHARDSON
Position/Archetype: Short Combo Guard
College: Michigan State
Pros:
Shooting: 41% on 3 attempts and to me the most translatable part of his game is to take pull up shots with his handle on the three coming off screens or more ideally and commonly will be him moving and creating space for himself off ball and getting open looks which we saw a lot of at Michigan State and is very valuable as a skill being able to find space on and off ball.
Handle and Self-Creation: This leading from the last part is he has a nice handle and can get to his spots very easily, he can self create off ball and on ball as well as having quite developed off screen movements. Im sure he picked up a lot of general tips off his dad that you wouldn't get from a lot of guys. He does prefer dribbling to the left and sometime looks uncomfortable going right but generally he's able to find his shots although tough ones.
Advanced Numbers: Jase's Advanced Numbers are great, almost 5 win shares with 11 BPM an Ast/To thats over 2, a TS% of 62, Low Usage, high Percentile in almost all categories of Offence its reasonable to suggest him doing positionally on a reasonable 20% USG%. It's hard to bet against a guy like that. Some similarities to Jared McCain last year.
Shot Map: Very Elite map with Efficiency all over the court and volume from all levels, only weakness is low volume from the long mid range and other than that he is efficient at a lot of parts of the game, now im not confident the finishing efficiency stays strong but has been efficient so far.
General Efficiency: Efficiency as a passer and efficiency as a scorer and as a shooter is great from a role player. Being able to execute plays and lead to buckets at a high level is always great. The passing is at a questionable volume in my opinion but with him being so efficient now i'm sure it won't hamper his turnovers that much if his Volume increased.
Feel and Game IQ: One of the smarter players in the draft his general game IQ and knowing where to be on the court helped defensively and offensively, manoeuvring screens offensively and avoiding screens defensively, his decision making and problem solving combined with the general instincts you see from some highlight plays is something that impressed coaching and i'm sure he has gained a lot from his NBA lineage.
Cons:
Right Hand: One thing that you can spot looking at film is he is uncomfortable to dribble and score with his weaker hand, now is unable to use it? No but I do need to see more comfortability and better volume since this is something that will be on the scouting report plus he gets himself in tough situations due to it. now his off ball shooting means he can be consistent as a scorer without the ball or without finishing but its something that will need development.
Size and Role: Probably the biggest question most people have for him is he is a 6'1 Guard barefoot probably 6'2 with shoes with decent athleticism but nothing really eye popping usually is your point guard and Jase not really having Point guard qualities and having a low volume passing game, majority off ball scoring would tell you he is more of a combo guard which rarely has 6'2 guys play the role. Does that mean he can't? No sure he can I think Jared McCain kinda showed that being a Combo guard with similar qualities to Jase and being so impactful day 1. I do not think Jase is as good as McCain is as McCain is a bit more polished to me and the problems I have with Jase really aren't there with McCain outside of the size of the guy and Jase is a tad smaller. So it's interesting to see if he's another exemption to the rule but I think he showed the special characteristics of a player for me to think he can be.
Balance: Tad picky but he isn't very balanced and some of that will be size wise, maybe he can be a lot stronger and he can take contact better and that would really help with his game since he is more small and can be deterred quite easily. Being stronger and holding his ground and keeping balance with his shot and with his feet as a defender will be important for his game.
NBA Pro Comp: Jared McCain
Projection: Someone I have a lot of doubts on, but in general the stats and history has really made me turn around on him, I loved him to start the year, more game time exposed some flaws to me. I think there's a starter there potentially, I just have some issues with backcourt fits. I think Ideally he can be a scoring 6th man and he can be really damn good at that.
