HISTERICALCHEES DRAFT PROFILES: KAM JONES

KAM JONES

Position/Archetype: Creative Combo Guard

College: Marquette

Pros:

  • Ball Handle: Ok Pretty nifty handle here, he keeps the ball really close to him, has a nice rhythm and sets himself up very well, very efficient driver to the rim and uses an array of nice moves you expect from an older combo Guard like himself. Loves to go to his spin move and has a decent bag but maybe goes back to the basket too much for my liking

  • Finishing: prefers the left hand but has a pretty scoop based bag of layups and is patient enough to find a good look at the rim over a defender, he can reverse or go high off the backboard and maybe use his floater. can draw a lot of contact for and 1 plays too

  • Kick out passing: He drives quite a lot and one thing he's been able to do efficiently is kick out through various passes but more commonly wrapping the ball over his head back out to the three point line to create open looks off his driving gravity and a collapsed defence.

  • Spot up shooting: Efficient off the catch and bounce but not really convinced totally by it or him gaining much gravity on the 3 point line. But the efficiency is there as an off ball player.

  • Positional Size and defensive translation: He's quite big size wise and pretty strong which is good for him guar both guard positions but really nothing else intrigues me on the defensive side. I don't think he's anything to write home about on the NBA level but doesn't make many mistakes and will need to adapt to the NBA defensive system as he is someone I view as scheme reliant.

Cons:

  • Age: 23 year old prospect with very little room to grow size wise but also skillset wise, its just harder to make people adapt to new positional needs and team needs the older they are so this caps him.

  • Athleticism: For guards Kam looks like a pretty below average athletic guy which we usually don't see from this type of guard. simply isn't very explosive or fast on the court and has to rely on his diverse skillset to find open shots and get good looks so personally this is my big question on what holds him back.

  • Left Hand Dominance: Teams were able to take away his left hand at times which makes him a lot less uncomfortable as a finisher, he can get scouting reported pretty easily for this and I expect this to be something he has to balance to find consistent minutes.

  • Moving Shot and Mid Range: Regressed moving three point shooting and off the dribble three point shooting as well as low mid range volume and really no mid range game at all, I personally think you must be able and willing to shoot moving shots as a bench creator and scoring guard in the NBA so I really am unsure over this.

NBA Pro Comp: Malcolm Brogdon, Reggie Jackson

Projection: I just don't see what makes him someone who can get consistent NBA minutes, I think he might be an end of bench called upon when needed scoring guard or doesn't end up doing much in the league at all.
