June Dubta here: I’m so excited. I can’t believe this is happening. I’ve been working on this for a month! 😁 Please like and flame. I worked so hard on this! Alright, back to May Dubta:
Before we get into it I have 2 things. 1, If you don’t think someone should be listed as a starting point guard, Chances are that I agree. I’m using ESPN’s depth chart for objectivity. The rankings are all mine so if you don’t agree how low or high someone is, that’s all me. 2, I will be going to from 30-1 as opposed to 1-30 for suspense. Here are my rankings!
TIER 1: BENCHWARMERS
30: AYO DOSUNMU - TIMBERWOLVES
He should not be a starter for any reason. This is sad. This has been a twolves weakness for a long time.
29: DAVION MITCHELL - HEAT
He is better than Ayo because he is an elite defender and good distributer; yeah I’m not sure why Ayo is a starter. That’s sad.
28: SCOOT HENDERSON - TRAIL BLAZERS
Sad to see him here after where he should’ve been but I think this is right for him. I think he’s on the verge of being starter quality but hey, unlike these other two he could still have a breakout season and surprise us.
27: EGOR DEMIN - NETS
Okay so this one is a weird one because unless something uncontrollable happens then he’s obviously going to progress more but I have to take each player at face value and if I didn’t know he was going to progress and become much better, this is where I would rank him so this is where he goes.
TIER 2: LOW-QUALITY STARTERS
26: RUSSELL WESTBROOK - KINGS
Feels weird having one of the greatest point guards of all time at 26 but he’s not going to be here much longer anyways so he might as well just enjoy while he can. Love you king. 👑
25: RYAN ROLLINS - BUCKS
2025 will go down as one of the best nba seasons of all time and for me, Ryan Rollins played a big part in that. No one expected from him what he produced. Not even his parents, trust me. It would be cool in theory if he could take another step up as well but I think this is good for him. A season being robbed of MIP is nothing to scoff at!
TIER 3: MID-QUALITY STARTERS
24: IMMANUEL QUICKLEY - RAPTORS
Not sure what to say about him. He’s like the definition of mid starter for me. Just, completely mid.
23: JALEN SUGGS - MAGIC
Lowkey, Gonzaga is one of my favorite colleges. Jalen Suggs is an elite defender and his progression a few years ago was incredibly needed. This is a hard team to be on but he’ll make it work.
22: FRED VANVLEET - ROCKETS
This one is probably the most disrespectful one. The rockets lost this year solely because they didn’t have fvv and I “reward” him by putting him 22? How could I possibly justify this?!? Well, there’s nothing I could say about him to put him this low. It’s more a statement about how good the point guard position is as a whole.
21: DARIUS GARLAND - CLIPPERS
I don’t know what this season was. For him, this was absolutely freaking atrocious. Also clippers by his name feels weird but that’s not why he’s down here lol. I don’t know what to say I’m absolutely appalled by how bad he was this year.
TIER 4: HIGHER-QUALITY STARTERS
20: JA MORANT - GRIZZLIES
Yeah not sure what to say about this one. I mean on one hand, if he hadn’t have ruined his life then the Jazz would’ve never got jjj. On the other hand, I had him as the best point guard in the league at one point (Yes, even above Luka. 🙄) so this is crazy for someone this “young” and disappointing to say the least.
19: DE’AARON FOX - SPURS
I do believe I have him lower than the average human being but with that being said, his success with the kings was just not there. He’s undoubtedly all-star caliber but he only gets in, in his winning seasons. That means he has two winning seasons on an at the time non-tanking team.
18: KYRIE IRVING - MAVERICKS
This is possibly my most controversial ranking. I am not a Kyrie fan by any means. That is not to say I was biased. What I mean is I hate the way he plays. He is a losing player. I don’t care that he went to 4 nba finals in a row. Thats what happens when you have LeBron James on your team who happened to go to 8 in a row during that span. Kyrie is overrated. Deal with it.
17: TRAE YOUNG - WIZARDS
He is so close to being in this next tier but he fell off this year. That’s not the main problem though. The main problem is clearly his defense. I just don’t believe his elite shooting, elite shot creation, and elite passing can out way the MASSIVE elephant in the room in that he couldn’t defend a traffic cone. (See what I did there? I took the classic bad defense analogy and flipped it! 😜) Seriously though it’s a huge problem.
TIER 5: WINNING PLAYERS
16: DEJOUNTE MURRAY - PELICANS
You saw what he did IMMEDIATELY after coming back, right? That’s insane! If Zion had that level of impact he wouldn’t be close to a bust! Dejounte Murray turned this team around immediately after coming back and now I am praising him for it. 16 is good for him.
15: JOSH GIDDEY - BULLS
Feels weird calling a player who literally didn’t make the playoffs a winning player but I think I can justify it. Look at his stats. He was doing everything he could to lead his team to victory. Box score stats don’t define the whole story, fortunately they don’t need to because he hasn’t been a lifelong bull. He also played for another team: the Thunder, the best team in the nba! He is a winning player and you can’t convince me otherwise.
14: CJ MCCOLLUM - HAWKS
I mean he litterally took his team from the most mid team of all time to the playoffs. He did what every other player in this tier couldn’t; actively lead his team to the playoffs. Cj McCollum is impressive.
TIER 6: BRIDGERS (Bridge meaning the bridge between all-star calliber and superstars)
13: KEYONTE GEORGE - JAZZ
Holy crap I can smell the hate from a mile away. Even though this is a completely unbiased spot for him, let me explain myself. 🙄 So basically, he just averaged 23.6, 6.1, and 3.7 on 45, 37, and 89. Objectively uncontroversial but sure, let’s let the casuals who know they don’t know or watch anything about the Jazz argue to a lifelong Jazz fan who studies the Jazz in his free time, eats, breathes and dreams the Jazz about the point guard of the Jazz. Sound like a good idea.
12: DERRICK WHITE - CELTICS
He made team USA. That was 2 years ago. Works with and against him and I tried my best to factor both in as much as I think they’re relevant. Overall he’s probably one of the winningest players in the nba currently and I would love him on the Jazz 👀
11: STEPH CURRY - WARRIORS
So… yeah… this is controversial. But Steph Curry is not currently a top 10 point guard in the league. Not sure what I can do to back that up, but he hasn’t been successful in the playoffs since 2022 (not just because of it being a ring but because it was the last time he got past the second round.) last year was also the first year they made it to the second round since then anyways. Not that it’s his fault for his team not succeeding, but every other point guard from now on is either undeniably better than curry right now, or has had a lot of success since then.
10: LAMELO BALL - HORNETS
Okay… maybe one exception. In my defense anyone who watched the hornets this year knows that they are prone to making a deep run any time soon within the next few years. It’s pretty obvious. Lamelos playmaking, craftiness and scoring puts a prime Lamelo above a “washed” curry. (Washed compared to what he used to be)
9: JAMES HARDEN - CAVALIERS
He just made the best run of his career. Donovan was the reason; James harden was just a main part of the supporting cast. Would’ve felt way better about him doing this on the rockets, but he didn’t. 9 is good for him.
8: JAMAL MURRAY - NUGGETS
As a Jazz fan, I know more than anyone how explosive prime Jamal Murray can be. Well, he’s pretty tapped in this year (though they lost) and this might be the best version of him that we’ve ever seen. He’s scary.
7: DEVIN BOOKER - SUNS
He is very arguably a superstar. The reason he is not in the superstar tier is playoff success which the only bit he has is from when a back of prime Chris Paul joined their team. Devin Booker played a lesser part in that.
TIER 7: UNDENIABLE SUPERSTARS
**6: TYRESE MAXEY - 76ERS
We already knew he was great, but we didn’t know he was this great! This year was kind of like an ultra-breakout for him! I’m not sure if this stat is still true but at the start of the season there was a stat that surfaced listing the top 10 ppg scorers without points they got from free throws, and he was number 1! Number 1 without free throws! What can’t Maxey do? (Minus make a playoff run lol)
5: JALEN BRUNSON - KNICKS
Wow. That was crazy. I ended up keeping my list because, I don’t think he’s as dominant as the next 4. He had KAT. I’m not discrediting him tho. What a run. I think jmg’s bio had Knicks in 5 when he was a Knicks fan. I wonder how he feels. Anyways, Brunson is something special. I knew it when he sent my team into a 4 year rebuild when he was a Mav. I did not know this was gonna happen. What a freaking year for bball. Wow.
4: CADE CUNNINGHAM - PISTONS
When Cade was going on his huge run with the pistons in the regular season, he was compared to Luka. I didn’t think he was better. In fact, I don’t think he’s top 3. There’s a player we’re discrediting and he will make sure we don’t forget about him the same way next season.
3: TYRESE HALIBURTON - PACERS
Yes. Tyrese Haliburton is at 3. He is crazy. 2024 pacers finals run like labaron4mvp said was special. I think something similar has the potential to happen again. Pacers as a whole got better. Whether the lottery was rigged or not this year, pacers have a great team and I wouldn’t count them out even if they are a little weaker on paper compared to the rest of the contenders.
2: LUKA DONCIC - LAKERS
Not really in a tier with these other guys but I already have one player in a tier of their own, I can’t have two in a row. There is a clear gap between Luka and Tyrese, and a clear gap between Luka and one. I think everyone already knows who one is though so no time to waste, let’s get into it.
FINAL TIER: MVP
1: SHAI GILGEOUS-ALEXANDER - THUNDER
I am actually among the minority of people who like shai. I’m sure I wouldn’t if I had something to lose, but I don’t. He helps us lose, we help him win. It’s a mutual understanding 😂 No but seriously, if you were playing a sport competitively and you found a loophole that makes you and your team way better, wouldn’t you exploit it? For me that question is a no-brainer. Absolutely I would. If anything, it’s Adam Silver and the refs’ faults. (Which it is)
If you enjoyed this article please like, flame, and be sure to comment all of your thoughts on it. If anyone ranks another position and gives me credit before I make one of that position, that’s fine, just know that I plan on making one for all positions so if you see someone make a position ranking before me, just know that I didn’t copy it.
But yeah that’s all! Thank you so much for reading the whole thing! I’ve had this idea since early/mid-may but I needed to wait for the season to officially end to make some last minute decisions. (Specifically Cade/Hali/Brunson.)
Love you Fanspo!
