HISTERICALCHEES DRAFT PROFILES: THOMAS SORBER

THOMAS SORBER

Position/Archetype: Rim Protecting Short 5

College: Georgetown

Pros:

  • Size and weight: Huge Shoulder like do broad shoulder it tricked people into thinking his arms are super long, yes he has a 7'6 wingspan, no it isn't that impressive since he has a very low standing reach. Shoulders out to wingspan guys. Anyway besides the shoulders he is a strong build shorter side center, nice to see someone with this size at a young age.

  • Defensive Instincts: Keeps the arms high which allows him to stop shots around the rim since very little people can move him around especially guards on switches and he's light enough on his feet that when they drive on him he uses his mismatch to his advantage. Is he the perfect perimeter guarding center? no but there's a pretty defensive versatile build there.

  • Post efficiency: 68% at the rim is some very elite numbers, great to see and then a 74th percentile player in the post. the PnR efficiency is there in the 77th percentile but there's some film problems I dive into in the cons.

  • Stocks: Crazy number of stocks at 3.5, just a great disruptor in the paint who can cause a lot of chaos, but its not insane to where I think he's a top top defender in the class, has limitations in athleticism. But 89th percentile defender is always gonna be nice.

  • Rebounding: Good to Great rebounder and uses his size to his advantage here. I think one thing ill give him is he's got some good putback film and I think this Is wha will make him interesting to a lot of teams lacking size, an affinity to block and rebound.

Cons:

  • Athleticism: Unexpectedly has pretty low athleticism, doesn't get up very easily and his lateral movement isn't as great as you wish for a quit undersized center height wise at 6'10. Improved movement would get me a lot more excited about his defence as well as his use as a lob threat. It's surprising it's so low, maybe due to his weight.

  • Scoring and use of Body on Offence: I think he should be using his large body more, and if I see that in college play I really think his body usage is gonna be a problem as an NBA player, thats very simple. He struggles to push people out the way when under the basket to find his shot, and when he gets trapped he refuses to pass out too much. He gets blocked too much at the rim for my liking and has pretty poor numbers in the pick and roll and primarily scores through pretty open looks and offensive rebounds. When attacking drop coverage against players like Kalkbrenner, it just felt impossible for him.

  • Spacing: Although willing to shoot, the three ball is a big let down in his skillset, You again would like the ability to shoot for someone who isn't particularly dominant as an inside offensive force or someone who can create one for themselves with their handle for example. I think the form isn't too bad, but the shot isn't there for the amount he settles in the mid range or from three. Just him being out the paint causes misses.

  • Injury: he had a broken toe, usually not too worried on injuries but I hear HEAVY CENTER and FOOT INJURY I start getting worried, this is a VERY common injury for big guys and center and becomes reoccurring and i'd be lying if i'm not worried

NBA Pro Comp: Xavier Tillman, There's some Robert Williams III type stuff in there. Maybe a Robert Williams with a more modern skillset?

Projection: seems like a pretty decent bench center in my opinion with potential for injury issues. What he has is some intriguing modern center characteristics and high defensive instincts so he will find a role, I don't see the upside here though. Don't buy the shot or the athleticism improving to raise the ceiling.
