Clear the mle hard cap or the aprons!
The idea is simple: waive a player and stretch the amount owed over a five year period. Then resign them to a veterans minimum contract, which only counts $2 million towards the team salary because the nba reimburses the difference to the team doing so. The player will receive the contracts worth plus the amount already owed and have none of the back end cost of being tied down to one team.
The stretching allows one to lower the team salary also, by the difference of the contract amount, so if one was to make $50 million over two years and stretch the amount owed the team would pocket $15 million towards their team salary.
This allows for any player to be traded for any other player, provided they are both veteran’s minimum contracts once they clear waivers and are resigned by the same team.
Then it’s just a matter of how many veterans minimums one would like to sign. Even in the case of the hard cap, only $2 million of each contract is counted which is huge. In the instance described above one would be able to sign up to 7 veterans minimum contracts, which allows one to completely overhaul a team without risking being stuck without a full roster.
This is huge. It means the rules actually work in the favor of the teams despite appearances.
