Ok, so I just found out I have to write about the sun being hot… sorry for not being active. Guess I have to come back because well the Chaos Mock 2.0 (go join please) is a thing now and they need to call back the old-timer to do the heavy lifting.
Maybe it’s good for me to come back… I mean who do y’all have as a OG role model? Maybe Atto, who it seems like y’all love and are just now realizing he’s a bit crazy sometimes. Doing the whole Joker bit again… why dude?
Anyway you wanna know who else was crazy? Icarus. I think a better approach to proving why the sun is hot is not by breaking down the science. I hope some of y’all are smart enough to know how nuclear fusion works. Instead, we’ll prove that it’s hot by talking about Icarus.
The story goes that Icarus’ father Daedalus (architect of the labyrinth) built wings for himself and his son to escape imprisonment on the island of Crete. Before they flew away, the dad warned not to fly too high, or the wings made up in part by wax would melt. Well, Icarus did exactly what he wasn’t supposed to do (kind of like Jayson Tatum in the 4th quarter), flying too close to the sun, causing his wings to melt and for him to die from the fall.
Using common sense, we know that candles, made of wax, melt due to the fire lit above it all. That fire is hot. You could have learned this from touching it for some reason or just feeling the staggering heat of a candlelight church service. Therefore, for Icarus’ wings to begin to melt the closer he got to the Sun, the Sun must be hot.
But hey Schlenk, you might ask, that doesn’t explain why the Sun is hot. It’s not hot just to kill Icarus one time, it has a bigger purpose. And while now I could introduce the nuclear fusion process or explain how its heat keeps our planet and ourselves alive, a better, deeper explanation can be found in the lyrics of “Icarus” by Bastille, copied below:
“Look who's digging their own grave That is what they all say; you'll drink yourself to death Look who makes their own bed, lies right down within it And what will you have left? Out on the front doorstep, drinking from a paper cup You won't remember this Living beyond your years, acting out all their fears You feel it in your chest Your hands protect the flames From the wild winds around you Icarus is flying too close to the sun And Icarus' life, it has only just begun It's just begun... Standing on the cliff face, highest fall you'll ever grace It scares me half to death Look out to the future, but it tells you nothing So take another breath Your hands protect the flames From the wild winds around you Icarus is flying too close to the sun And Icarus' life, it has only just begun This is how it feels to take a fall Icarus is flying towards an early grave You put up your defences when you leave You leave because you're certain Of who you want to be You're putting up your armour when you leave And you leave because you're certain of who you want to be, oh Icarus is flying too close to the sun And Icarus' life, it has only just begun This is how it feels to take a fall Icarus is flying towards an early grave Oh, oh Oh, oh, oh-oh oh-oh, oh, oh Oh oh, oh, oh, oh, oh-oh oh…”
Icarus as a human was kept alive by the sun, but by getting too close, by risking himself in the heat of the moment, he passed away way earlier than he should have. I feel this is a great metaphor for the Creator of the Universe.
God is all powerful and providing, keeping us alive and giving us life. But, in the Old Testament when you got too close, when you were exposed in full as a sinner to his presence, you’d perish because that sin causes separation. Luckily enough, Jesus’ death on the cross was a perfect sacrifice for our sins, as the sinless took the fall. But, he got back up, and he beat death, and by doing so the Tabernacle curtain was torn, and God can be with us through the Holy Spirit.
Now, there is a different choice, still relating to the Sun. We can love God and believe in Him, and thank him for what he provides, but still have a healthy fear of his power. When you don’t have fear, when you constantly rebel against God, sin against God, reject His offer of grace and mercy, the heat hurts. Separation from God hurts. Jesus came to bridge that gap, and I hope anyone reading this can maybe take that message from a random essay about why the Sun is hot and ask yourself, put it on your heart if you know the God of the Universe? If you don’t, I’m happy to tell you in a more serious tone what I know.
Why is the Sun Hot? Because it reflects our Creator. So does all of the beautiful creation we live in.
The Sun is the Son.
