Jaylen Brown has made it clear he would like to be a number 1 on a team, though Randle and Brunson could be thought of as number 1 options, Brown would be the alpha scorer on this Knicks team. The Knicks have gotten inconsistent play from Barrett and likely won’t take the next step unless they get better play from his role, adding Brown adds consistency and upside that Barrett has struggled to show. This would result in a team that could be ready to make a championship push adding to the league’s 11th highest scoring offense.
On the other hand, it is possible this is the best offer the Celtics could find for Brown to maintain their championship timeline. As stated previously, Barrett has had an inconsistent streak since entering the league, but a fresh start and a new role could allow him to take the next step, not to mention an elite coaching staff. Boston also receives Obi Toppin in the deal who can replace Grant Williams if he does indeed walk in free agency. Toppin brings to the Celtics a scoring punch as a lob threat and a pretty advanced offensive skillset, defensively he offers 3/4/5 versatility with his length and athleticism.
