TL;DR

  • Bucks get under the second apron to avoid massive penalties down the line and increase their depth

  • Pelicans get a perfect fit at starting center in Brook Lopez, get below tax

  • Pistons get BI to pair with Cade

  • Wizards trade some veterans paired with some bad contracts to bring in Isaiah Stewart- a good young center and great fit next to Sarr and the rest of the core rebuild

The Bucks Perspective

This is pretty straight-forward. The Bucks need to make some move at the trade deadline to get under the second apron to avoid massive penalties down the line. This trade moves a great player in Brook Lopez who is likely nearing the end of his peak performance and will be a free agent next offseason for Jonas Valanciunas, a younger center who fits the timeline of the Bucks' stars and is on a good multi-year contract and they also add some depth.

The Pelicans Perspective

The Pels have to trade BI and get a solid starting center. In this trade, they accomplish both these goals as well as dropping below the tax. In addition, Brook Lopez fits the team's needs in nearly every way aside from the age question. For this season alone though, he would be an elite fit next to Zion in the frontcourt. They also pick up another center to round out their depth at the position.

The Pistons Perspetive

The Pistons have been atrocious for ages. They need to get some talent next to Cade and they have plenty of cap space to give BI his extension and still have room to add players next offseason. Stewart and THJ is an incredibly low price to pay for somebody of BI's caliber and he can take some of the offensive load off Cade's shoulders giving him more opportunity to grow his game on the defensive end. After this trade, their starting lineup would have Cade, BI, Tobias Harris, and Duren, and while some people probably would want to start Jaden Ivey at the 2, I think it makes more sense to put Ausar at the 2 for two reasons. First, they really need some defense in that starting lineup, but second, with Ausar in there, their starting lineup would consist of players all 6'6" or taller which in itself will improve the defense. Then, Ivey can be the 6th man and continue to develop his skills against teams' second units (plus personally, I'm pretty low on Ivey anyway). Personal aside, but I also think the Pistons should swap Duren for Walker Kessler rounding out the defense and the team as a whole.

The Wizards Perspective

This is where, I imagine, most people will probably start to question this trade. To me, there are two reasons the Wizards do this trade. First and most importantly, I think Isaiah Stewart is an excellent fit next to the young Wizards young core. He's young and fits their timeline. He can step into the Jonas Valanciunas role at the 5 while Sarr plays the 4, taking on the bigger bodied centers while Sarr plays the roaming shot-blocker. Stewart is a capable shooter and Sarr is projected to be a quality shooter too, so they can aim for a modern 5-out offense. Beef Stew will also bring some toughness to the team and organization that they haven't really had for a while. Between Coulibaly, Sarr, and Stew, they would have a highly capable defense and I predict Bub will also be a very effective two-way player. I just really like Stewart's fit with this team overall. They picked up Valanciunas to cover for Sarr's weaknesses while he's developing, but if they can trade him for a younger version who fits their timeline and can shoot better, I think that's a very valuable move. The second aspect of this trade for the Wizards is that it gets them off of several multi-year contracts of veteran players who aren't part of their core. They instead bring in THJ's expiring contract opening the space to make moves next offseason to improve their core even more.

I think it would be fair for the Pistons to send the Wizards a second or two, but the Pistons are already pretty low on picks, so instead, I had the Pistons pick up some low contracts for players that would otherwise probably have to be waived and stretched.

Lmk what y'all think.
