There’s a lot of talk of trading Poeltl. He’s getting older and his contract sucks. Why not Dallas? This is my entry into the first round of Dubta’s trade challenge. The prompt is to trade a player you’re certain will be moved this offseason, and the player in question here is Jakob Poeltl.

Why the Raptors do this:

Gafford is a clear upgrade over Poeltl: better, younger, and more team-friendly contract. This deal not only improves the Raptors center slot in the short-term, but also increases their cap flexibility both short- and long-term with a cheaper and shorter contract.

Why the Mavs do this:

This acquires essentially a guaranteed late first (the pick is already a swap, so it will probably convey) for Dallas and all they give up is a backup center to Lively. Poeltl is a good vet and serviceable backup, and while the contract isn’t ideal, the Mavs aren’t competing immediately anyway.
