My Take on the Trade
I think the Cavs made a great trade here. Giving up just a first and a second for Watson is crazy value. He’s still young, has a lot of room to improve, and can become a really good long-term piece.
For the Clippers, I understand it. Strus is a good role player and he’s expiring, so they could potentially flip him at the deadline for another asset.
For Denver, I think it’s pretty bad, but I understand why they did it. Being over the second apron gives them very little flexibility, so I get why they wanted to move Watson’s contract. The problem is that they didn’t get enough in return. If you’re going to move a young player like Watson, you should at least get a better package back.
Denver probably had very little leverage because everyone knew about their financial situation, so teams could basically wait for them to sell low.
