Every other day there's a new report talking about how the Warriors really want Kawhi. This lets them get him without actually harming their roster at all. Jimmy Butler has one year left on his contract and is most likely gonna be injured for that entire year, so he's just dead money. The picks could end up being very good, but maybe Steph and Kawhi and whoever else is on the team will still be good enough to make them a playoff team a couple years down the road. With Kawhi being a borderline top 5 player last season and having his healthiest season in years, he's definitely gonna cost them some picks, especially when they don't really have any worthwhile young guys to give up in the trade.
The Sixers get off from Paul George's horrific contract two years early, and can maybe use that cap space to build a legit team around Maxey, Embiid and Edgecombe, counting on Edgecombe's natural improvement and Embiid's relative health. In return, they take on Jimmy Butler for a year, who probably won't play but might be ready by the playoffs. At the very least, Jimmy could be a fantastic mentor to Edgecombe and really help him grow into a star. There's also a good chance Jimmy would just choose to stay in Philly and resign/extend for another couple years. Sixers do this without giving up any of their own picks, just the Clipper's ones from the Harden trade a couple years ago.
Clippers move into a full on rebuild with the 5th and 11th pick, as well as near full control over all future picks, an unprotected 2029 Pacers pick and an unprotected 2028 Warriors pick, when Steph will be 40, Draymond 38 and Kawhi 36. They take on Paul George's terrible contract for two years where they don't expect to be competing anyway, and maybe they do the old OKC trick of making him look good for a season before flipping him on his contract year for better assets. I'm trying not to be too biased by giving the Clippers more picks than what's reasonable, but if they could regain control of their 2027 pick from OKC somehow, that would be great. Great start to a rebuild when they've already got a couple promising looking younger players.
