Why They Do It
GSW: The Warriors bring back KD and will look to make one last push at a championship. They have to give up Wiggins, Kuminga and picks but it's worth the risk to give Steph every chance to win that 5th title. Given they also lose Schroder and GP2, they need to sign a guard for the rotation. Opens up a great oppportunity to bring in Markelle Fultz for the rest of the season. Love and the two young wings could also be very valuable contributors.
PHX: The Suns turn KD and Royce O'Neale into Jimmy Butler, Jonathan Kuminga, 2 1st round picks and 2 2nd round picks. They remain competitive while gaining some highly valuable draft assets that pretty much save the future of the franchise. It will be interesting to see if they extend Jimmy and Kuminga long term.
MIA: Given how poorly handled the Jimmy Butler situation has been, the Heat get a pretty good return for the disgruntled star. Love and Richardson also had to be moved to make the deal work financially but that doesn't change much for them going forward. A lot of these assets can be flipped in the offseason or kept long-term depending how the next couple months of basketball go. Wiggins could be a very key contributor for the Heat and is as good a Jimmy replacement as they were going to get in the current market.
DET: The Pistons go into this deal having 14m of cap space they could use. With Ivey out and Detroit needing a secondary ball handler, they take advantage of the situation and nab Dennis Schroder. While he's struggled badly in Golden State, the Pistons will hope he can find the form he had in Brooklyn earlier in the season.
