For the Blazers: They just don’t need three quality centres in the building, and so getting off Ayton’s larger contract is beneficial. Marcus Smart can be a good mentor for Scoot, Simmons and Sharpe, while providing a very strong defensive presence on court. Brandon Clarke is just salary filler, but can provide good backup centre minutes if an injury occurs.

For the Grizzlies: JJJ just did not work at the 5 last year. As much as it is improving, his offensive presence wasn’t quite as impactful as it needed to be at times. Ayton allows for floor spacing next to Ja, and hopefully can buy into the winning system in Memphis. Marcus Smart didn’t really work last year, and getting off Brandon Clarkes contract is a win.
