Dallas Tanking

FAILED

It appears to be clear that Dallas only way to give a sense to the season is to tank as hard as they can, and try to get as many assets as they can around Cooper Flagg.

Obviously, it has to start with AD, whose value is as low as it has ever been, so it will be extremely hard to get a great return. A destination can be the Nets, who are yet to find a star to build around, and if tanking for the rest of the season, they could find themselves in the 2026/27 season with a core group of AD, Cam Thomas, Claxton and a top five pick that can be decent to try and make the playoffs in the East, as they owe their 2027 frp to the Rockets from the Harden trade. In return they would get MPJ's huge contract, that is still less expensive and shorter than Davis's one, and Terence Mann that showed he can be a valuable rotation player at the Clippers. In addition Dallas gets a 2027 Knicks frp, and it's own swap in 2029, plus 2 additional srp of their own. For AD this would be a fresh start in a franchise that will put him at the center of the project, and have the chance to play PF as he always wanted.

Even if fans would hate it, also Kyrie could be delt elsewhere, and I thought Detroit would be a great fit that would pair Kyrie next to Cade Cunnigham, another big-guard with similar characteristics as Luka, and would bring the Pistons to make a jump into contender tear. The Mavs would get Tobias Harris, big expiring contract, and Jaden Ivey that has had struggles over the last few seasons, but is still very young and can form a great partnership with Flagg for the upcoming years. Ofcourse they also get back a pick in 2028, year where the Mavs don't have their own pick.

After the two main guys, the Mavs can get some value from role players like Gafford, Thompson, and PJ Washington, with the first two given to Boston in exchange of Simons' expiring contract and a 2027 frp, with Boston desperate for a center to compete next year, and Klay being a three-point threat that would fit perfectly to the Celtics' system. PJ Washington finally, he would be useful to many contenders, and I thought San Antonio would love to have him, adding defense and spacing, while the Mavs get their own frp in 2030 (swap potentially with Minnesota) and Kelly Olynyk's expiring contract.

At the end of the process, Dallas would end up with 7 picks, all between now and 2030, period where they don't have control of their own picks, useful players like MPJ, Mann and Ivey (who is still potentially a young upencoming All-Star), and up to 67.6 mln dollars in expiring money with which they can sign important players (a high level point guard mainly) next off-season, and start to build a competent team around Cooper.
