Grimes makes sense for Chicago as a younger off ball guard who brings defense and credible shooting. He doesn’t need the ball to impact the game, which fits well next to creators, and his age lines up better with a retooling roster than Tre Jones. If the goal is to solidify the backcourt with someone who can realistically start or finish games, moving a future pick for that type of player is a reasonable gamble.
Philadelphia makes this move despite already having guard depth because they still lack a real organizer. None of their current guards naturally control tempo or consistently run the offense. Grimes is more of a scorer, VJ leans combo, and McCain mpact comes mostly off the ball. When Maxey sits, the offense often gets rushed and disjointed. Tre Jones gives them structure. He can manage possessions, initiate sets, and keep the offense steady instead of devolving into late clock improvisation. That kind of control is something their guard rotation is missing.
