Why the Bucks do this: The Bucks out of a Giannis trade want a young building block and multiple picks, and this trade is the best they will possibly get. Dylan Harper has shown elite PG potential. The picks they are acquiring are valuable too, with the 2031 best of spurs or kings pick, 2030 best of Mavericks, Wolves, and Spurs, and 2027 best of Hawks and Spurs. That is 3 good to great picks that they could potentially flip to the Pelicans and/or Blazers in exchange for their own picks back.
Why Spurs do it: Getting Giannis would change the trajectory of this team from a maybe can be a contender to a real prime contender that would be neck to neck with the Thunder. In this trade, obviously giving up Harper and picks is a real killer, but they don’t get rid of any other real rotational pieces. They keep Devin Vassell, Keldon Johnson, and Luke Kornet.
Do I think this happens? Absolutely not. I think the Spurs will continue to value the future outlook of there team, and I believe that’s the right decision. The amount of pressure that the Spurs trio of guards put on opposing teams offensively with there excellent ability to get paint touches is unlike any other teams in the league, and all 3 fit very well alongside Wemby. However, Giannis and Wemby is a match made in heaven on both sides of the ball, and it would be incredibly sick to see that duo alongside Fox and Castle, and it would also be cool to watch the Bucks allow Dylan Harper to have his own team and build around him. I believe he could, in that situation, become a top guard in the league and I think he will be fantastic anyway in San Antonio.
