This could make sense for both teams.

Utah :

With the JJJ trade, they showed they'll try to be competitive next year. Honestly, with Keyonte, JJJ, Kessler, Markkanen, and Ace, I don't think they'll be a lottery team, but they can't be very competitive either. Since they won't be tanking, they'll be wasting a 2027 draft pick somewhat. Therefore, trading KD to build a more competitive team next year, while also having the 2027 BKN (probably top 5) and 2027 PHX (probably around 15) draft picks without being affected by their own ranking, is a viable option for them, even though they'll lose their 2026 draft picks.

Rockets :

I think KD is performing great, but the team's unity from last year is gone. Lauri is overpaid, but he still fits easily into the team chemistry and helps with their physical game. Even though they'll lose two good draft picks for 2027, they can draft the PG/SG they need, in the 2026 draft. They can replace FVV with the 2029 Phx and 2029 Dallas draft picks and build a team that will be competitive for 11-12 years.
