The Clippers acquire Ricky Rubio from the Minnesota Timberwolves in exchange for Patrick Beverley, Lou Williams, Mfiondu Kabengele, and a second-round pick. Los Angeles does this to acquire their ace playmaker, which they need next to players such as Paul George and Kawhi Leonard. Rubio may not be the defender Patrick Beverley is, nor the scorer Lou Williams is, but he is at least two years younger than both, and is a significantly better passer than both. Furthermore, the Clippers really need a pure playmaker who can run the offense and get the most out of Paul George and Kawhi Leonard, which Rubio does. Rubio would significantly diversify the Clippers' offense, which is something neither Beverley nor Lou Williams can do. Luke Kennard can also easily slot into the role of a scoring sixth man which is Lou's role on the Clippers.

Minnesota receives two guards they can use in their rotation in Patrick Beverley and Lou Williams. Beverley can pair with D'Angelo Russell in lineups where Russell would play SG for defensive purposes and if Minnesota needs offense, then they can go with Lou Williams. They also receive a defensive bigman to pair with Towns in Kabengele, to further augment their young core. Minnesota also receives a second-round pick from the Clippers.

The Clippers finally receive a pass-first PG next to Kawhi and Paul George whereas the Timberwolves get solid value in Williams, Beverley, and Kabengele as rotational veteran guards and a defensive big to add to their young core.
