Not sure if the Pelicans front office is still wanting to trade Zion, but if they want to get off his contract, they do this deal or something similar.

Expiring deals offer flexibility for the Pelicans starting next off-season and they get Chicago's 1st round pick next draft, which gives them a prospect they can add to their rebuild around Derik Queen and Jeremiah Fears.

The Bulls take the risk on Zion to be a better competitor in the East and possibly escape mediocrity.
