Ben Simmons & Bradley Beal are one some of the worst contracts in the leauge right now. In this trade, the Suns downgrade player wise, but get their draft picks back, while getting rid of Beal’s massive three year contract. Simmons is on an expiring deal, so if he doesn’t work out they can let him walk. He could play some solid minutes on a Suns team with little depth, and further adjust to being a role player in the NBA. He also brings solid defense and playmaking to Phoniex, and doesn’t need to score a whole lot on a team with Booker and Durant. The Suns are still getting two first rounds picks, which they are in desperate need of, so I think they will benefit from this trade regardless of Simmons’ development. On the other hand, the Nets upgrade at the PG position, while finally finding a trade partner for Simmons. Beal will take some of the offensive burden off of Mikal’s shoulders, while allowing for the continued development of guys like Cam Thomas. Beal can be a mentor to this young core in Brooklyn, and hopefully get back to the level he was in Washington, or at least close to it! There is a risk here for Brooklyn, but they are gambling on the chance that Bradley Beal plays better in a Nets uniform.
