The Hawks’ Path to Antetokounmpo

FAILED

This is your post-Christmas trade if things go south for the Bucks at the start of the season — and I’m very convinced it will.

Very simple:

The Bucks get their picks back, a Giannis-lite in Jalen Johnson, and an excellent young prospect in Dyson Daniels. Porziņģis can easily be rerouted to another team for additional picks, but that decision waits until after the season starts and we see how healthy he is. The Bucks might prefer Risacher over Daniels, and the Hawks will surely push to include Alexander-Walker instead of Daniels. I’m also confident the Bucks could extract another unprotected first-round pick from Atlanta — something way out in the 2030,31 or 32 draft, after the Giannis years — and they probably should. For the Hawks, this is huge: They effectively swap Myles Turner for Kristaps Porziņģis — both similar player types, but Porziņģis has far more upside when healthy. The thing is, Porziņģis is almost never healthy. Turner isn’t exactly the most durable either, but he’s much healthier than KP overall.

But most importantly, the Hawks land the Greek Fucking Freak.

This trade would instantly make them the top contender in the East, and they’d be fully equipped to go toe-to-toe with the Thunder, Nuggets, or anyone else the West throws their way. Trae Young and Giannis would instantly become the best 1-2 punch in the league, surrounded by shooting — terrifying for any opponent.

Who says no? Very easy answer: Giannis. I can’t imagine he’d want to play for one of the worst basketball cities in the whole league. But maybe Giannis is exactly the guy who could change that culture in Atlanta.
