In order to completely understand the moves a team makes the timeline of events must be listed as well.
Pre Draft
KCP opts out and extends for a 4 year deal worth 71 million dollar deal with a PO in each of the last 2 years.
Explanation: KCP knows he could get more by hitting free agency but is committed to Denver. They reward him by allowing him to leave early if he really wants.
Draft
Pick 28 the Nuggets select Dillon Jones
Pick 56 the Nuggets select Nikola Djurisic
Explanation: Jones is a wing who can do a little bit of everything and should fit the Nuggets system even if it takes a year or two before he gets the opportunity.
Free Agency
Nuggets want to avoid the 2nd apron this year so focus on minimum deals. With that being said they pick up Cody Zeller and Alec Burks on minimum deals. Zeller gets 1 year deal and Burks gets a 2 year deal with the PO on the 2nd year.
Non Decisions
Nuggets have some good players on their g league team that they could bring up but instead decide to go with their rookie Djurisic as he gets a cheap contract helping with the cost saving.
Start of Season
Starting lineup:
Murray
KCP
Porter Jr
Gordon
Jokic
Off the bench they lean on Jackson, Burks, Braun, Watson and Zeller. They still lack front court depth but by replacing DJ with Zeller they get a little better off the bench. They send Jones down to their g league team early on to play with some of their more veteran guys down there.
During the season
Nothing too ridiculous here as the Nuggets remain consistently good. However, they do shop Reggie Jackson at the deadline looking for a big man to potentially replace Zeller.
