Why the Wizards do this:
D’Angelo Russell is a solid PG who can be a first option for this team while they rebuild. The team gets off the failed Poole experiment with only a (likely late) second rounder. A solid first option like DLo will help guys like Sarr significantly as they aren’t thrown into the fire quite as much. Plus, maybe Gabe Vincent can have a solid year, but the Wizards aren’t banking on that here. A low-risk, solid reward move for Washington.
Why the Lakers do this:
I’m well aware that this idea is pretty out there, but hear me out. The Lakers give up two players who are of low value to the team right now and retain plenty of trade assets (Rui, Vando, etc.). Poole was pretty great as a sixth man on the championship Warriors. Why not try that again in LA? Starting lineup of Bron/Reaves/Rui/Vando/AD, Poole comes off the bench like it’s Golden State all over again. Besides, you have all of Hollywood’s biggest stars to activate Poole’s superpower. They also acquire a second round pick that could be traded or used to get another young guy.
